Dime- and anybody else listening in on this call- This is what really frie$ my butt about the $almon River Fi$hery. Dime got guys who are THERE reporting the fishin "sucks" today and suggests mid river. The D$R report $ay$ it has $lowed from ye$terdy but there are $till fi$h on the D$R today. Been fishin up there for well over 30 years and have learned the language by trial and error and costly no fish trips caused by overzelou$ bu$ine$$ reporing$ of fi$h movement. I make a big deal about it cause I hate to see guys fall in the trap cause some cant make too many trips a year and there arent many in just yet.

Sounds normal to me,it's early. If you are lucky to be where the few fish that are coming in are you might get some action,it's like this every year. Dropping the water flow sure is n't a help but it is what it is.

WE all know that Dime- Just that John Q chompin at the bit for his one or two trips a year reads some of this stuff and thinks 'game on' when its 'the regulars' getting them with years of experience and NOT John Q who needs some fish or luck to find them now. We know which rocks and little spots to go to when its sloooow. The reports are likely true enough--- to a point- and like you point out today they seem to be coming in low now. Hopefully for bout a week. Ya know- fo da party. Am planning on DSR sometime in those few days too. Been too long. BTW- Im talkin bout the fishing John Q guys- not the ones I met with the 40 lb test ( no lie ) slashing the other day.

Well I fished there this morning, hoped to hook up with Tuna and fitchy but it didn't work out. I hooked 4 in about five hours most of which was walking, either looking for them or a place to fit in without crowding the younger and faster walking set. I hooked 1 in the flats, first piece of open water, although there was a guy in what looked to be the best holding water. Saw 3 hooked up in joss while fishing there, they sure jumped alot for kings. That is to say they were fishing short drifts and getting their hook out of the water fast for the nextdrift. Over a dozen guys in the upper clay. Eventually saw 2 landed that came down from there. It seems we not only have hybred kinghos but a cross with bluegills since they seemed to put their sides to the current alot as they were being landed. I did see some more bent rods up there. I wandered down to the meadow and found only 3 guys fishing it. Plenty of room so it was my nirvana for the day, The first fish hit after 4-5 casts, shook and headed for the lake. Still being on a 5 pound lifting order after my fusion, once he had my flyline run out I pointed the rod and cracked him. The fish were hitting about 1 every half hour. The guy across from had 1. I hooked the next 2. Got them to stay close by throwing some slack a couple times and changing rod angle but the end result was predetermined by my restriction coupled with my unwillingness to chase kings a quarter mile. Then the guy across from me again followed by the guy 2 below me. Then it was time to leave and I don't know what happened after about 11 am. Didn't see 1 coho, which is what I was hoping for since once you start them up the burn themselves up and I might of had a shot at landing something. My second fish hit a #4 double pink bunny fly on the first cast. Anyone who fishes bunny and bou knows they don't sink well til they are thoughly waterlogged. This king came within 4-6 inches of the surface to crush that fly. I had to wait until he shook his head away from me before I set to make sure I didn't pull it away from him. All this while watching him come to the fly, grab it and start shaking it as if trying to kill it. That one fish would have made my day. Fi$hing reports are what they are. Right place right time or not makes a world of difference in what you report. I would certainly not call what I saw today a run, but I have to figure a least 10 or 12 went by without hitting for every one that did.

Your making me nuts- Now I gotta go down for fresh fish next week. They never seem to hit or hold like that for me upriver early on. Cept for a coupla long learned little places. Like to move around too much to stay in one spot half the day waiting for one to come in and hold. Happens too often early on like that up river a bit. If I had fishin like that above town my wife woulda had to call the Law to get me to come home. Love the way you color up those jumpers and side swimmers. Hmmmm why would they do stuff like that. Silly fishes.

Don't think of them as holding down there as much as pausing. Ya gotta figure the seam-break they will rest in for a minute or two before moving on. I was near enough to the lake that even though it wasn't a strong run enough were moving that every half hour or so you would have a few in front of you. PS they were in a meanazs pizzy mood today. Always a big help.

The pause is the best because they don't lose their aggressiveness like stationary fish do.

Ugly- I do knockem a bit here and there but the DSR was bout the only place I went for many years. Even before there was a DSR. Fresh fish . Now ya gotta understand that there are some days nothing new is coming in and mid river is better. Learned over time that after they start coming in regular and a few decent pushes ( not the trickle we are talkin bout ) the upper River gets good and stays that way for the rest of the season. Now , with the luxerey of time and several days every two weeks throughout the season - dont need to go down for freshies any more and can relax upstream. But -only up for a trip or two a year- DSR on at least one day.

Had the water drpped when you reached the secret hole in which I hear you put on a free clinic on the weightless swing? I was a half mile downriver and left before the drop hit. The hole I believe you were crushing them in had a couple guys hooking up with a lot of jumping kings on the higher flow so I passed it by. I'm sure it filled as the water dropped and the kings started looking for a little depth for cover. Musta been fun but these fresh brutes will sore you up if you play with too many. First time I've ever wished I had a cell phone. Was it you and Rich waiting at the lot till the dude came over and said it was alright?

None left in my box either. Go up river and swing some more-you might get a two fer. It was amazing. Next time it may be Chartreuse. If I used a 14 wt and 2 flies, I truly believe I could've hooked doubles. Charlie

The water had started to drop, I used a little weight to get the bunny (you could probably use rabbit skin as an indicator ) about mid-column. There were about 10-12 cars parked when we got there. Sorry we missed you, but it sounds like you had a great day anyway. I had a blast fishing with Tuna, he's a righteous dude. We're on the board for '11. Charlie

Ps; last year if a guy claimed that they hooked 20+ fish this time of year he would be bombarded with people calling out BS.... don't worry I believe you...lol... you deserved your success yesterday... tight lines brother...

the thing I'd like to add was that we fished HARD all morning and I truly thought it was going to be a shut out.. No fish were really moving. I told db that it sucked UNTIL we found fish that were holding from the day before.. I had my doubts about the place we fished but being uncrowded and unpressured they were VERY willing to take our flies.. No forced hook up and lots of bitters.. If in that same place the usual ker-plunkers had been there ,it would not have been possible for us to allow the fish to STRIKE and swing to them.. They really do take a fly if you let them.. Charlie it was all my pleasure to fish with you yesterday !!

There were 2 short drifters there when I passed down so over the top for me. Glad you got there when you did. If I hadn't been talking to a guy I met, while pulling off my shirt cause of the sweating, along the corn field I probably would have looked over the egde and seen you guys 10:45ish. They were moving all morning once I found a place to swing so I'm sure as the water drop they decided the extra depth there was the ticket for a while. Musta been sweet! My bunny I tied a quickie [image][/image]

Yea wader there were 2 non English speaking rippers at the head.. Lucky they stayed there and plunked to the non bitters and left us alone.. 10:35 we just got there .. There was 1 other swinger fishing near us.. once Charlie found the color it was a pink swingers party for the 3 of us.. The thing is, many people could fish that hole together if folks are willing to allow the fish to strike.. When chuckers come in it just shuts the bitters down and spoils the whole experience for the fishers.. We got lucky .. Would I have fished there if it was full of lead > NO .. Really folks the Salmon fishing is what "you" decide to make it..
