Fall Walleye Tips and Tricks
Okay so it is almost that time of year when the eyes began to go crazy. We had good success with the walleye fishing the 3 rivers thread, so i wanted to start another for people who want to share some tips/tricks that they use to get the biggens. This is an information thread so if you plan on being an a## please dont post. Hopefully this will end up loaded with different ways to catch walleyes I am going to try something new for me this fall. i am going to use a floating jig head and put a barrel sinker and stopper about a foot away that way when i cast up river i can have my bait floating just over the the bottom with the barrel sinker making alittle noise by bouncing. i have also considered painting the sinker so that it adds some color kinda like the blade on a harness. that is what i am going to try how about you

eye, I'm not sure this would be considered a real 'technique' but the largest walleye we caught on the river was on a live bait (about a 6" or so bluegill) which was back hooked and set out to drift just off bottom under a float over a flat extended point at the lower end of an island. (deep water was close by)We were actually targeting catfish but evidently the big walleye can be pretty aggressive during early night hours in the fall. Although that catch was an accident we intend to try to repeat it this year given the oppurtunity.

2-tone reddish/orange with yellow floating jig head 2 feet off a big split shot slowly pulled across the bottom tipped with a creek chub.. the big walleye love natural creek chubs this time of the year.

In the Susquehanna I catch bigger walleyes in the fall on HJ 14 Husky Jerks. Most fish that hit them are over 21 inches. Try ripping them or a very slow retrieve. Twisters catch everything including some big eyes. I catch way more fish on jigs than any live bait. Also less of a hassle to carry a mile through the woods!! Hope this helps.

Have picked up 2 monster walleye from the river over the summer on 6in swimbaits..slow steady retreive.
The moment of truth. Where all other things unconsciously melt away from our minds the instant a fish takes our fly. We stand there on the water with wide eyes, caught in a battle stance with an idea of confidence and hope

They are a curly tail grub mainly. you can get them in paddle tail and other variations. Hair jigs in deep water. same program as always for me. jigs and some fatheads. Slow summer for me didn't get into any big fish in the river but did catch alot of short fish. plan on spending more time huntin steelies this year.

Mr. Twister is just the brand name. Kind of like people calling all facial tissue Kleenex or all bleach Clorox. They and all twister tail grubs are great for the rivers, and much easier on your wallet, with the rivers being full of snags. The shad bodies are as good or better at times too. Large walleye seem to be caught on just about anything in the Fall. You just need to be in the right place at the right time. I do think creek chubs are a safe bet for weeding out the smaller ones though. My personal best was 33" on a chartreuse twister tail. Although, he was foul hooked so not sure if that counts, about 2" outside the back of his mouth. Likely went to examine the twister and bounced off of a rock into his side? I thought it was a musky or wiper, for the fight it gave. Was dissapointed that it was fouled, but helped ensure it would spawn again... My second best was 32" on the fly rod, with an olive and white clouser minnow. It just flopped around, with not much fight.

Ed my bad on not getting back to you sooner. water is a little high for the average. it is at about 26000 cubic feet per second. that is still very fishable. i dont fish the allegheny in anything higher than about 28000. this is the link i use for the allegheny it is for the natrona water shed http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?03049500 and here is the pa link so you can check other waterways. it took me alittle while to figure out what was fishable for me. alot of driving and looking at the river and checking the discharge (thank God for smart phones) http://waterdata.usgs.gov/pa/nwis/rt

Fished the Alleg. on Sunday and it was a mess! Water was fairly stained and murky, but there was debris floating everywhere...Needless to say the fishing was lousy, especially for trolling. The water os still relatively warm, my finder showed a surface temp of 73 degrees. It probably will be a few weeks before any significant bite starts to happen.

Saturday wasn't too bad down around my way, Harmarville. Water was up but not real muddy. I caught a few bass and seen a ton of fish splashing aroung chasing minnows. Sunday looked the same as Saturday but I didn't fish. Today...forget it. I'm taking a break for a while. Water is higher and muddier than it has been. IF there isn't more rain this week the water should be nice come this weekend.
