can anyone help me out??

so me and a buddie have been fishing a discharge on the river at night time from boat. there are fish busting the water all around us and we throw everything we have at them 2 nights in a row and only came up with a walleye (rattle trap) and channel cat (chub) close to the top of the surface.

we have thrown creek minnows, chubs, rattle traps, husky jerks, swim baits, jigs and pretty much everything else in the tackle box..

so anyone have any idea of what we could use or a special way to be more productive on this discharge??

ive been fishing for many years and so has my buddie but were both stumped here...thanks guys

no idea, im thinking they might be skipjacks also? any idea on how to catch them? i could usem for flatheads. but the fish are busting water everywhere in faster water around us even hitting the side of the boat at times. they come up like every 3 min smack the top of the water then boom there gone...

i have seen carp jump as well. if they are skip jack try a little floating fly about 6 ft behind a small weighted float so you can cast further.  they are probably targeting bugs so try to find something like a winged fly.

I was thinking fish targetting bugs too. If that is the case, there are a ton of culprit fish that will feed on them. Not sure what type of bug it would be. You'd probably notice if it were a mayfly or something large hatching though. Night fishing on a boat with a flyrod isn't easy business... I wouldn't do more than roll cast for them, or you're likely catching your buddy or other gear.

Also depends on what kind of discharge too. The old Montour discharge (refined sewage) would shoot out small pellets that adult gizzard shad and other non-preditory fish would rise to the surface to eat.

they are skippies busten the schools of minnies or baby shad. i fish the hannabal lock on the ohio for them all the time. the best way is to use a sibiki rig for them. they sell them at cabelas now in wheeling. use a 1/2 to 3/4 oz sinker on the bottom of the sibiki and rip it across the top of the water real fast, just barely letting the flies on the sibiki get under the surface of the water. the best time is rite at daybreak. sometimes you have to wait for the skippies to get there, then they will move in and out. when they are in they will be busten everywhere, when they move out just wait for awile they be will be. sometimes 5 min sometimes an hour. have a cooler of ice ready to put them on till you get them home then freeze them in water. if not they will get really mooshy and not be worth crap. they work best on blues but flats will eat them.

if your useing sinkers the heavy on the rigs how are you keeping the flys right on top? even at a fast reel seems its would be too deep with that weight

i think cabelas does, besides that you will probably have to order 1. if your from Pa, watch out with the cast net. they are illegal unless used on the lakes specified in the book. if the skippies u see are bigger u can also tie a couple small mister twisters to your line a couple inches apart. i use 4 of them when doing that, but most guys just use the sabikis. put little peices of sponge on the hooks when your not using them. this will help with getten them hooked on everything.

dont know how big, deep, heavy, etc... the discharge youre fishing is but im sure there are big fish there, too. from a boat and depending which discharge youre fishing, Hopkins spoons or something similar/cheaper work great, but imo Bomber Slab Spoons in white are best on the rivers when fishing large, deep discharges from a boat. they work great for jigging/throwing into dam whitewater also. just sayin'

if you get some skippies keep it a secret. they go for $3.00 to $4.00 a pound and people buy lots of them.

Most likely Skipjacks. I have snagged them ripping a rattle trap through the explosions thinking maybe wipers were schooling bait fish.
