Dutch Fork Lake

Thanks to all involved in the rebuilding of Dutch Fork Lake. Finally on it's way to becoming a local get away once again. Thanks for the updates Pheasant Tail, I'm sure you played a big part like you did with ice fishing at Cross Creek. Kudos to Arway and others involved for leaving the established growth for fertility instead of spending more money clearing necessary fish cover. I'm looking forward to enjoying the explosive fish growth in this "new" fertile impoundment. Let's give thanks to local government working for the people. It was the people who cared enough to write and call and bother their representatives to make this become a reality. AND, the gas drillers. Their financial input was paramount. A true win-win. Reality from our state gift, the Marcellus Shale.

The gas drillers will be getting a lot of water out of the deal, water that will no longer be part of the hydrosphere.

Where are you figuring it'll go?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The closer we adhere to the Holy Bible and the US Constitution (as it was written) the closer we get to the model that made America great. The great American experiment worked, human nature just got in the way.

It will go many places..... Some polluted water will stay far underground beneath the water table, and nobodies really sure were it will go or when. Some of it will be recycled, stored in very vulnerable ponds and released into wells with much higher concentrations of carcinogens and salts. Some of it will be shipped into already overloaded municipal waste water plants and treated poorly to be released back into the enviornment. Some of it will possibly be released illegally into other watersheds under the cover of darkness,or spilled.

So when you say its "under way", are you saying that they started work? I haven't been out there in a while, what has been done so far? I just started to fish that lake when it met its demise. Last I was out there it was deserted, the bridge crossing the creek was blocked, and the gate was locked on the far side.

Have you noticed if they opened the rear gate? I went back there 1/2 way once, I was curious if I could drive back there yet or if they re-opened the bridge.

    or spilled.

Even if it ever was spilled, not that it ever has been, it is nothing a couple a pig mats couldn't soak up.  They would never do anything to keep press away, like close down a state road for 3 days and allow no one on foot within a mile, or take anyones cameras or memory cards or anything.  They wouldn't guard a spill from people seeing what was going on, even if it was on a public road, or in a public waterway.   They would never do that.  They wouldn't hire a meth head for 8 bucks an hour to drive a truck with the valve stuck open for 2 miles before he realizes it.  Heavens no, they wouldn't do that.

Great news Dutch Fork Lake fans.... work has begun! I drove out there yesterday and there is a Department of General Services project sign, a very well driven road down to the dam, and a pile of gravel and rock at the entrance to the dam entrance road.

I was shocked to see just how grown up the lake bed was, there are trees 15' tall that sprouted up, not to mention the low vegitation. The bridge at the beginning of the lake has dirt piled in front of it, so there is no way you're crossing that. The gate on the other side of the bridge is locked but the grass leading back there was recently cut and there were new tire tracks.

Looks like they are finally on their way to fixing the dam!

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you use natural resources too? Where the F??K do you think this energy comes from? Lets tap what we have. Nasty stuff coming from underground, wow, thats a shocker. You act like you have been here thousands of years and you still will be here for eternity. Good god, where do you people come from? You still wishin for hope and change? How's that workin for ya? You should get in line and protest along with the folks who want to end tree cutting now that they live in a house made of trees and common forest fires get WAYY out of control because of proper management. Oh, those evil insurance companies will cover that cost, silly me. I forgot, they get free money. Hell, the treasury will print it. Or PETA members who protest killing of animals while wearing leather shoes. Lack of common sense will be the demise of our way of life, not what the media tells you.

Back to Dutch Fork. Great accomplishment considering population and government money spent. Our local money working for us.

Hot Rod What you see is what your going to get. There is no dredgeing or brush removel going to be done to the bottom of lake bed. As far as bridge it is owened by Wash. Co.. According to Donegal Superviser the County As of now they have no plans of fixing or replaceing it. Maybe P.T. knows more about it.

Meatball, thanks for the personal attack. After working through your poorly syntaxed response I would like to offer a few points and questions.

Does your vehicle or your household appliances run on domestic natural gas? If they do, good for you.

How does supporting responsible gas drilling and financial transparency at both a state and local level become a political issue? The fact that I question the industries responsibility makes me an Obama supporter?

Are you familiar with Duke Lake? I believe that lake has a history of sorts with the energy industry and their amazing record of environmental stewardship. Dunkard Creek?

I think its interesting you call the Marcellus Shale our "state gift". A hundred years ago coal was our "state gift", and to this day the streams of Southwestern PA are still scarred by the energy industry recklessly extracting it. Every major watershed in this part of this world has been deteriorated or destroyed by the coal industry to some extent. As a "pro angler" this should be of some consequence to you.

I support the responsible extraction of natural gas in PA. I just think it should be done methodically and with proper checks and balances in place. Capitol raised from its sale and extraction will never exceed the long term revenue stream recreation and tourism creates over generations. After all the lease checks have been spent, and all the water trucks are gone, residents of this state will still need clean water and a place to call home.
