spinning rods i go for a 10 ft noodle rod personally i have a 10 ft pinnachle noodle rod i think a paid 30 bucks for it at poor richards and fly rod again i have a 9 1/2 ft blackeagle 7 wt fly rod I paid 5 bucks for at a yard sale the reel with a butter smooth drag spinning or fly is more important than the rod in my opinion. yes you do get what you pay for but i have been more than happy with my cheaper rods and higher priced reels with good drags.

I have a 10'6" Shakespeare agility lt action noodle rod. It handles very nicely but I think its a bit too soft. I'll go back to a med action for my next rod. But I do love the length.

I use a 9'0" St. Croix Triumph. It's got a nice soft flexible tip but when you get down farther into the rod there is a nice amount of backbone that likes to tame angry steelhead. I would also agree about the reel, it's probably more important. I have a Shimano Sedona and love it. My brother has a Shimano Sahara, it's 20 bucks more but I didn't notice that much of a difference compared to the Sedona. The drag is beautiful...

Get down to the Erie Sport Store downtown Erie before it closes I bought 3 noodle rods. They have Fenwick and St. Croix ranging from 60 to 70 dollars which is a steal. I prefer a 9 foot for all purpose I've used up to 13 but 9 foot gives you length yet most backbone for bigger fish

Pretty much nething will work. Go test it on some carp. If its got the back bone to drag a carp through some weeds it'll handle steel. The reel is more important ne way. I started out w a 7ft ugly stick. Long rods just help w line control. I'm up to 10'6 lt action now. It could use a lil more **** but it wupped a 10lber nicely last fall.

Definately helps w line control. Gander mtn in greensburg has a decent selection of noodle rods if you want to hold one in your hands before buying one from fishusa.com!

    Eye -

Do a search on "noodle rod" above. I have a 9' Agility, through FishUSA, from doing the same. It is pretty nice, and use it as a crappie rod too (and wipers but swap out to a heavier line reel)... Pretty inexpensive too. If you have a crappie rod already, then I'd say go for it. If you are going to use for both, and looking to purchase, I'd probably go with a light wieght meant for steelhead and use on crappie, rather than the other way around. If I did it over, I'd go with the longer rod, but the one I have is easier to transport.

A fly rod (fly line especially) is much easier to use for drifts IMO. Limits you on some baits, but who said you can't fish eggs, wax worms, sacks, jigs, ect. on a fly rod? It is much easier pulling in line slowly, and roll casting back out, than reeling in while it is drifting and recasting every time, IMO. Now, if you are fishing the dead of Winter, the fly line will freeze up the eyelets faster. Minnows and lures are a pain to try to fish with a fly rod though. If in a creek, it's definitely the fly rod for me (8wt.). Also have a 5wt, but with how crowded the streams are, it's nice to be able to muscle a fish in a bit.

For some, using the UL rods in Erie has been the mainstay forever, and where they do have a certain purpose (light action, protects light line)  I prefer to use a faster action spinning rod blank, or even a fly rod blank built into a spin rod that would be rated a moderate to fast action blank.  Ultralight rods for steelhead beat the crap out of my arm all day and are very easy to get tangled when trying to make a powerful cast.  The tip being so slow has a tendency to "whip" around in a circle when following through with a hard cast not only defeating the line shooting through the guides quickly, but also creating the potential for a tangle. A faster action is better (IMO) for fishing jigs, lures and eggs because of the responsiveness, backbone for a good hook set, and power to land a fish quickly.  I am not a big advocate of fighting steelhead on a noodle rod, you just can't put the brakes on them like you can with a faster action rod or get them to the bank quickly and efficiently.

Also, there is a little differentiation as to what the manufacturers are selling as "true noodle rods".  If you have ever held the St. Croix Wild River 10'6'' noodle (part number WS106ULS2) you have seen a TRUE noodle rod;  It bends considerably just under its own weight, where as other manufacturer rods are more than likely on the other side of the envelope being a light-moderate design.   There are millions of different steelhead rods out there for the consumer, if you are looking for a good weekender, Fish USA sells the JBI and Riversider rods, both great stock model weekender rods.

As far as length goes, 9-9'6'' are probably the best all around lengths, but 10-10'6'' are popular as well for more experienced fisherman.  Also take into consideration the handle set up.  If you are fishing in Erie, I would advise against the Michigan style grips (long foregrip, short rear).  These are great for fishing large rivers with slinky shot, however on a small stream they are less than desirable and cantankerous to cast.  I prefer either a short (2.5-3in) foregrip, with a 12 inch rear grip, or a handle that meets in the middle (6 fore, reel seat, 6 rear).  There are tons of options out there, off the shelf, I would recommend anything from the St. Croix Wild River Series (or Avid if you aren't on a budget) which Fish USA sells.
