I only fish the 4" trout worms and usually do well with size 12 or 10 hooks.  My hook of choice is the C14S GLO BUG hook from Gamakatsu.  These hooks are super sharp and strong.  I also use them for Salmon in the Fall and they don't break at the bend like other small hooks.

I have success with #10 Gamagatsu octopus.

Little pieces of these worms or the knock off Eagle Claw worms, work good tipped on small mariboo jigs for crappie too. If I fished for sTeL// more often, I'd probably give that a try. The daughter loves the pink ones, and so do the crappie at times?

For the past couple years I started tying a Gamakatsu size 10-12 hook in the middle of the worm like I was tying a San Juan Worm.  Works great and you get a lot more life out of the worms.  Match the thread with the color of the worm.  I also use the trout size.  I have also wrapped lead around the hook shank to keep the worm down or get a slow drop.
