night fishing muskie pyma

To those experience Muskie fishermen I am looking to do a camping trip on Oct 1st at pyma to give my self a chance at the beasts. I do have the gear as in pole, line, and lures. Want to know where to go in pyma and how deep and in october what colors are good or dose it matter. I am using six inch repala stick baits. I want to give my self a chance to get one muskie small or big so I don't want to go to big. I do understand at that time of year you want BIG bait for them to get themselves fat for winter but I have never caught one so I will take what ever size I can. I will be using a kayak to troll with and when not trolling I will be casting to the banks of shore and fish the bottom with chicken live for some cats. I know the work you have to put into muskie but want to give my self a chance to caught other things also. I am going to start out Saturday and fish all through the night into Sunday morning.

Nightfishing from a kayak in October sounds more difficult than catching a musky to me.

Its not difficult at all as long as you have the right gear. Alot more people than you know do the whole kayak fishing and kayak night fishing.

It's a smaller lake, also known as a "numbers" lake. Might give you a better shot. Pyma has not been giving up her muskies much this year.

I kayak at night for muskies but wouldn't do it in daylight in strong wind. I suggest larger loud lures. Six " Rapalas will make you more likely to catch walleyes which I'll never complain about but fall is a great time to think big. The easiest way to catch a muskie is no breaks and forget about other species.
Pymie traffic at night may make you consider a battery powered light on a pole mounted to the back. Scotty makes one. You are legal with a flashlight or headlamp in PA (not sure about Ohio) flashed at a boat to indicate you are unpowered. I'll bet Buck knows this but I'm just cutting others off at the chase.

Yeah kayaking at night will be the first for me and I am getting a strobe light to put on the back. Now I do sit there day dreaming hoping and thinking what the F*** am I going to do if I do get a big muskie and.......... I have not decided yet. I will be in the middle of the water some where trying to figure out how to get it on my lap to get a pic of it with out falling in. It will be challenging but I will figure it out and I will put pics up to if I do or don't get anything

Hey all thanks for the tips...
I will be going along with buck306 and would like to state that we will have are kayaks lit up like a Christmas tree. we both will have a light very similar to the scottie light that bubblegumworm brought up.
    I will also have http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/5203678/WildCat_Lighting_LED_fishing_l
well Im not paying 150 for them but I will have something like it.
Anyway I just wanted to "time in" and say we are not nuts.
I would also like to extend a welcome to anyone who would like to get in to kayak fishing.

So is there anyone else that wants to give up any good places in PYMA. And what is everyone thoughts on how clean pyma is. I like to eat catfish but not a big fan of them eating anything that comes there way so not set with me well that depending on where you go they can be a dirty fish to eat.

Certainly clean enough.  I've ate channel cats from there before and they tasted great.  Still keep the walleye, crappie, and perch that I catch from there as well.

Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.

Night fishing can pay off but it's more of a challenge. Musky do feed aggresive at night but what night? Your at the right lake just got to hit the right night......good luck.  Night fishing photos ..... http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/580443244XsTYKW

i would try take some night time trips before if it is your first trip out and wouldnt recommend trying to put a musky on your lap as you said that could turn out very very bad very quickly

I kayak fish for musky and have caught them both casting and trolling.  I use a jaw gripper and keep the musky outside the kayak.  I would recommend long nose pliers and hook cutters. Your safety and that of the musky becomes very critical once hooked.

Out in the middle of the lake is much easier than on shore. To pick the fish up start lifting w/ the gripper and slide the fish on the side of the kayak and slide your hand under the belly till your hand is behind the first rear fin. The picture with wade alexander is a good example of where this is. I would use the rear pole light. the headlamps only when needed so you eyes adjust to the dark and you'll have more distance vision. A strobe will probably annoy your buddy and anyone else around you.

And again guys thank you for the help. I am taking what ever I can get as gospel. I do my studying and ask around on what to do to better my chances on things. I pick the brains of the experience to make my self experience and I pass it on.

And tell me dose weather play a big part in fishing for the beast? Would a top water bait work when the water is wave up. What to use in what situation as have baits? As I have been thinking about it I was thinking I would not think top water baits would work well when the surface of the water was NOT flat.

Zara spook style, single and double props, or very noisy topwaters all work in moderate (1-2ft) waves. Look for Lee Tauchen articles on the subject. Esox Angler had a great article on the subject from him with a great chart relating lures to waves (up to 4ft) and water temps. Esox Angler magazine has fallen off the face of the Earth however.
