Steelhead Predictions ~ Fall 2011

Im curious to read of those that have an opinion about
the steelhead run coming in the next 4 or 5 weeks.
Remember we had a very wet and late spring and a hot and dry summer,
so far......what do you predict?

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same

Good to great year, as long as you know where to fish for them. Hint- not all the fish go UP the streams. This past spring was very good for younger steelys(20-24 inchers). Some guys averaged 8-10 silvers a morning, for weeks.

Based on the reports I've been getting from friends with boats who are trolling right now I'd say a poor year, with a late run. Weather is going to have to cool down a lot, and there will have to be sufficient COLD rain to bring temps down to the comfort range for there to be any sizeable run. BUT I predict there will be quite a few fish just off the mouths and cruising the shores from about mid Sept on. A good rule of thumb is when the creeks mouths are totally blown out at least once by cold rains, the run will start.
Also, I'm predicting that some jacks will come in by the 5th of Sept. And there will be more fishermen than fish on the lower reaches of the creeks.

I predict that I will be catching steelhead this fall. How many per outing....well...that is yet to be determined.

Truthfully I think numbers will be down from years past.

I'm afraid that more of the same runs from the last 2-3 yrs is likely.  It been on a downward trend for numbers since I moved to Erie 4 yrs ago.  I can't imagine it turning around in only 1 year.  So my guess is about the same as last year.  Hoping for a few more though.  Unfortunately the crowds have not reduced proportionally.

ok it was just im april that there were post of hundreds of jacks around the lighthouse guys were going to catch them just for fun.  The fish are there the problem isnt the fish. Its the increasing crowds.  I love fishing and Ill walk miles just to avoid a crowd because i love to be on the water.  Lets face it everyone is saying the last few years the run hasnt been the same ok I can agree but what people are not looking at is the weather has been messed up for the past 4 or five years.  We are having late winters spring isnt starting till may and summer temps are going later in the year plus the rain fall lets not get on that I mean we had flooding rains in  may and june then july and aug we are watching for droughts and wildfires.  If we get a good fall rain that keep the tribs steady with water you will see  better runs thats it in a nutshell. peace out

The numbers are going to be lower than last year. This fishery is broke but no one wants to admit it. I have been fishing these fish out of Erieau and Wheatley the last 6 years. This summer was the worst ever. Yeah there were some days where a few guys put up some numbers. You never had to search them out, they were everywhere. We had some days where they came at will and you couldnt keep 2 rods in the water. When fish numbers decline the fish that are around are much bigger. Biggest average steel I have seen this summer. Same thing going on in Lake Michigan, there have been plant cutbacks and BIG Kings are the norm right now. Their fishery isnt broke, they simply are not planting as many fish. The PA fishery is broke. You cannot plant 2.3 million steel in 3 states and not have bonzai fishing, unless there is a problem. 2 years ago I noticed the motherlode was missing. Despite the low numbers me and a buddy hooked 104 on a November day. The following day we hooked 55. Not the norm for the season. What happened to all the fish? I called PA fisheries people and they were not aware of a problem. I emailed a bioligst and got no response. I dont have any answers, just questions that no wants to address. Regardless, I will still be on the tribs looking for fish. Probably still better than trying to catch Michigan steel. Besides, PA is alot closer for me. I can hear some of you guys now defending your fishery and gents you are part of the problem. Just so you know I am not some weekend warrior who fishes 2 days a season. I fish weekdays and fish 2-3 days a week. As a PA license holder who travels to your state for only 1 reason, steel, I want some answers. WHERE did the fish GO?

Very late run due to abnormally warm lake temperatures with very low numbers of fish. It is hard to imagine a year worse than last year but the 2011-2012 season could bottom out this down cycle.

my theory based on what I have witnessed over the past 6 years:

    1. Walleye population goes up, steelhead population goes down.
    2. Less fish are being stocked and more people are fishing during spring (leads to more smolts being hooked and killed)
    3. More people keeping fish. It is a put and take fishery but many of these fish can be caught many times while they are in the stream. You cant catch them from a freezer.

Stocking has remained fairly consistent for the last 7 years.  I don't think that has anything to do with what you are seeing.

Well stated, Esox_Hunter, about the consistent numbers of steelies
stocked in PA from year to year the past ten years.

it doesnt matter if they stock 10 million...

lots of things can happen to a smolt once it is released in the wild...

they are not thriving like they did 10,12,15 years ago and the walleye are not to blame...trust me

    hope this helpa

There will once again be so many fish. That even the guys using a 1/4 jar glob of powerbait, on a #4 treble, and 3/4oz anchor tied to 20lb mono will catch more than a few.

    Predictions:

    Fish will be there
People will catch fish from boat, sitting in chairs, wading in lake, and wading in stream
Live bait, tied feathers, and glued yarn will catch fish
    People will keep fish
    People will release fish
People will complain about the opportunity to catch stocked fish

I know these predictions are golden!

I think there will be enough fish to fish for but slow like the last few years. Of course there will be the same guys posting about their 50 fish mornings.
Hook a few, land a couple, rig up some kid and watch him catch one, and you had a good day.
