Steel; welcome. Cohoes can be available in the early weeks. In the drought we had 4 years ago we had coho in early september and a big run of them in mid september. They are unpredictable though. They more or less swim under the radar good luck...

For colored/ferocious hoes fish upper river from mid october to late november... than again in mid january to mid february you get some nasty fuggers that slash around here in there... again, good luck

The hoes really like camping at stoneys.

Stress is just one hookset away from being gone.

Good luck hope ya hit them real good- Also hope ya get some fish in early Sept. Can still be kinda spotty then.
Got the impression you will be making more than one trip- that second might well be mid October for a bit of most everything that runs in the river. Yes the Hos really color up during October into Nov. Great fish.

Hey steel; don't be surprised if there's a large presence of steelhead this september and october... not many summer runs have come in this season which I've noticed in past years that some early monster steel come in with the salmon when this happens. Sometimes in abundance. I think it was some time around 02 or maybe 03; an early run came in 1st few days of septembeer and big pods of big steelhead were mixed right in with them. My father caught an 18# that weekend and put it on the wall. Paul dangelo skinned it on the spot and we took the meet. To this day friends of mine still rave about how good that fish tasted....good luck

The fish actually fought to near death. We brought right to the shop after... I have been known to give a right jab to king once im ready to drag him up the bank. Not often thoughThey say if you stun them it protects the meat; otherwise I keep them alive until I leave...

Quick dispatch via a knife blade through it's pea brain followed by a gill slash for bleed out protects the meat.

But you were keeping for a trophy mount and probably did not want a bondo patch on the fishy forehead.

Your method holds true drake but id hate to be the one caught by a DEC while slitting a fish on the river

there is nothing illegal about bleeding a fish out,

    No tossing of fish guts..

Didn't know that. Regardless; I keep them alive anyway.... after bleeding and gutting them out I like to get them right on ice while still full skin and all. Then let them firm on ice for about 2 days; then fillet or steak... it makes a big difference. I hate bringing them to cleaning stations; they spray the meat with water and fillet the fish on a slimy table; and they fail to de-slime the fish; and lastly, they slap your soaking wet slimy fillet in a plastic bag for it to turn in to a piece of moosh...yuck...

If I decide to kill a fish I stab them in da brain or give em a rock on the noggin. I don't like to see things suffer.

that's all good; as long as it goes on ice shortly after...

Right. I have had dime Steel and Salmon fresh from the lake I put on ice on the last day of the trip cause my wife wants a fish, plus to show the kids. I wonder if the wife really wants to eat them or if it's her way of knowing I was actually on a "fishing" trip.

If you decide to keep fish the best thing besides getting them on ice asap is to cut a hole in their lower jaw, run a stringer through there and keep them in deep enough water.. Dont just run the stringer through their gills.. They will die within 10 min.
Winter time i would bleed them out and tie to a stringer.. if snow then just bleed out & toss on bank..

yep, that's the way...poke a hole in the lower mandible and run a line thru it..let the fish live in the river till your done..but I do like filleting the meat immediately after that for the smoker....and smoker only
