Looks like I should have kept scrolling...did waxworm just answer my question? Good luck with crowds when this is complete. Will there be "ladder nuts" now?

Of all the creeks on the Eastside, why they picked this one as opposed to 7, 12, or 16 mile I won't get.

Maybe because they have free maintenance on the ladders the golf course crew is taking care of the ladder and chute if and they do get plugged up with debris. I know they've cleaned out the ladder at least twice from branches being lodged in the ladder.

Because that's where they had the access TO do it, and access potential to make it worthwhile. Alot of people worked hard to secure funding, and make this happen. Yet others are never happy.

There is also the possibility for public access there and not along other streams.

Exactly, now you can park at the dollar general on buffalo road and go shopping after you are done. It's a double bonus for Erie's economy because everyone knows this town wouldn't exist without steelhead.

Skip thanks for the clarification. I have walked some of 4mile creek, but not all of it. I hope it works.

I think a fish ladder above manchester hole(aka chutes) would have served the fisherman and fish better...

.

I would like to see that too. But something tells me that if that was the only problem we would have seen fish stacked at that hole trying to get up.

That is exactly the point I was trying to make in my previous post.
There haven't been fish stacked at the dam in 5 years. Why would they magically be attracted to the ladder now. I hope I'm wrong...........time will tell.

One BIG hold up to a ladder at the Walnut falls is the massive amount of Ice that comes down thru there every spring. Personally I don't think there is a man-made object that can stand up to that amount of ice. Now, if they decided to excavate about 200 feet of the channel and make "steps" in the actual channel then they might have something. But then the falls would cease to exist. And yes the fish do "stack-up" at the bottom of the falls and the chutes. That's why the fishermen "stack-up" at the bottom of the falls. And there's darn few fish that make it above the falls. I watched one guy stand at the top of the falls and for about an hour and he kicked every fish trying to come up, that he could reach, back down. Real sportsman that one.

The fish have no problem at all getting over the falls on Walnut Creek during periods of high or even relativly high water. During the fall runs of 2007 and 2008 there were literally hunderds of fish piled in several different locations above the falls. I personally walked one stretch of stream (back in 2008) several miles above the falls and encountered at least a half a dozen pods of 50-100 fish and several smaller pods in between. The problem is that the last couple of years the runs have been so poor on Walnut creek (at least when compared to past years) that there simply aren't the numbers entering the creek that we saw prior to the fall of 2009. You know it is an off year for Walnut Creek when in November there are only 100 to 200 fish in manchester hole or 20 to 30 in the stop sign hole like their was last year at that time. The smaller the runs entering the creek, the less fish you will see above the falls. As poor as the runs have been the past two years, there were still enough fish above the falls to make for a decent day of fishing but you had to work for them and be willing to walk a relatively long distance in some locations to find them.

A ladder above the chutes won't make a darn bit of difference when there are only a fraction of the number fish entering the creek that there was 3 or 4 years ago. Ladders aren't a cure for small runs.

That's OK, I was down there at midnight netting them and tossing them up.

Imma take a huge sh*t in upper 4 mile to attract some of 16 mile's steelhead to the ladder. Don't worry boys, the ladder will get a workout.

Imma kick ur turd all the way down to the lake so the stank will push some fish upstream. If turds attract steel, anyone tie turd sacs? How bout a turd dry fly? Anyone die their turd bloo first?

There'll be plenty of stank flowing downstream. Leave it up there so they follow the scent up through the ladder, dUUd. Just mark it with a flag so nobody steps in it and messes it up.
