Four Mile Fish Ladder

Does anyone know if the notch was ever cut out of the falls above the new fish ladder on four mile yet?  Also, has the PFBC started to increase the numbers of steelhead stocked in four mile?

Last time I was down they hadn't started on the cut yet but I think I saw on the news a few weeks ago they had started it and it is supposed to be done this summer/fall...

I don't think they increased the stocking yet either...

    Adam,

I walked over the other day it will be done before the fall run (if there is much of one we haven't had a good one in a while). Pretty cool looking spared no expense, i thought some of our rains would have knocked out the first ladder by now but it's solid, we'll see how this handles those bad torrents we can get on these shale streams. My friend the green's superitendent had to clean out the first ladder more than a few times, we'll see how this new channel handles that.

For your curiosity and mine , I went down to take a look see after work like I said I was. Promises.Promises.

First time I got to see the ladder and the raceway around the falls.

Ladder is not really that impressive but the raceway is quite the challenge. Looks like its going to work from what I see but this has yet to be determined. We Shall See.

    Quite the project.

Thanks deetz that's quite a project, lookin great. Are they hoping for natural reproduction here? Or just more fishing access. Never been on this stream myself.

Pretty sure just more fishing access, don't know if reproduction is ever the main goal for steelhead.

Geez that seems like a lot of work and our money gettin dumped into something that isn't gonna work. I hope im wrong, but this just seems far-fetched.
Thanks for posting pics, its good to actually see the work being done.

Man be more positive, at least they're using our Erie stamp money for something that could create new access and more opportunities for easements. I doubt any new streams will be discovered anytime soon, and there's only a limited amount of easement opportunities.  It's probably a bargain for the PFBC to build the ladder and raceway, if you add up everything that went into this.

It's been a collective effort by several different organizations, penn state, and volunteers to remove dams, clean up four mile itself, and clean up feeder streams running into it.  If even some fish can get all the way up into penn state's scenic land every year, then the whole project will be a huge conservation success story.

kill3 , basically they are man made objects that allow the steelhead to move up stream. with out them the fish can go no farther than the natural objects that are preventing them to swim farther.

We'll have to keep checking in with Skip. I think it's about 8 years late though. Can you imagine the fish that would have been upstream in the fall runs of '03 and '04, when the creek was loaded with steelhead from the dam to the mouth? In the past 5 years, I've rarely seen fish past the first falls from the mouth. I wasn't a member of the golf club last year, but I was the 7 years before that, so I was there fishing or golfing almost every day. The last three years, rarely fished 4 mile or 7 mile, or even 12 due to the lack of fish. The entire east side has been pretty poor the last 3 or 4 years.

Be more positive? Isn't this the creek that no one is allowed to fish in on the lower stretch?!! Oh, wait, you can fish on one side for about 50 feet.
I can think if 2-3 other places where access is much better that these ladders would have done more good.

Alex the idea of the Improvements is to open up more stream access upstream...... They can go for a few miles if they run like they did a few years ago....

As someone who never ventures to the east side, I'm assuming that both sides of the upstream section of this project are fully accessible to the public?
