I had thoughts of starting a new thread but why bother : Salmo I don’t know the back story but you summed it up nicely for me.. Once you start fishing, you stop counting.. Numbers add up to nothing.. I started guiding because fishing became boring, helping others reach a goal was where it was at.. Of course I like catching fish but have as much if not more fun trying & learning about the fishery then the catching.. Now first lets talk Migratory fish : They are clockwork and the easiest to master if you look at things right.. I mean seriously.. Their patterns, their stream orientation , holding spots, hiding spots , lies, spawning areas & feeding patterns can all be easily tracked.. Meaning things are pretty predictable.. If you study and learn these things then the catching becomes easy.. At that point you become very proficient and the numbers go way up. So what’s next ? Just keep racking numbers ? Nah, not for me, it's about more learning.. What yet is there left to understand . May it be helping others ? It may be leaving biting fish to go find what it will take to make others bite.. It may be just looking to see when and why other areas don't have fish or why they do hold fish.. So basically with myself its not about how many fish I can catch it's how many I didn’t and why .. Now that is totally about migratory fish.. Thankfully resident stream , lake or pond fish still give you much more opportunities to hone your skills and much learning ahead.. Also the reasons I fish migratory trib fish less & less.. The numbers don't come as easy .. LOL.. Well I'm sure this has nothing to do with everyone but its my outlook.. Edit> P.S. the fish are on their way and ready boys.. If snagger says it's time that I would take to the bank.. I had thoughts of trying later this week but givin my limited ability I'm outta the game for a while yet.. Get up there so at least someone can claim the first Salmon picture to fishusa !!!

Cant wait to get out on the river -catch or at least hook and play a couple and then just sit back light up a pipe and watch the show. Like Tuna says - numbers mean nothing -to me it the experience that counts. Somethin ya just cant explain to folks who dont have the sickness. ps--for SOME of you- thats a regular tobacki pipe only used for fishin.

Retired Thanks for answering my post. The only reason I asked was because the last time I was up their you could park in town walk down the side streets and access the staircase that way. I fly fish for kings or maybe I should say I try to legally catch them on flies to the best of my abilities and sometimes like to swing flies in the pool below were the staircase empties out. I was aware that downstream aways from the staircase was recently posted but the way the convo was going it sounded like the entire staircase was now posted and my concern about that was, that's one less place for the rippers to go because I never venture up their myself. Now I realize I could have found out about all of this by calling a tackle shop or just driving down when I get up their and I'll defintely do that the next time.

Yes killer; you can get that advice from any tackle shop; but it will be less the character Hey; tail out of staircase is awesome man... prime water for just about any tactic; especially swinging though...

Wow- I never knew there was a bridge down that way. I never ventured down below the town bridge because of what I hear goes on. I would like to check it out, and see the black hole. Maybe I'll explore this year. If I had known about this staircase maybe the fish I got into in the DSR last year were there the next day? Was checking out the maps on this site earlier and realizing just how many pools I haven't fished.

Salmo - That's the only reason I fish the tail out of the staircase. Thats the first place they hit after they leave the dsr. I figure I still may be able to hit some aggressive takers without having to anti up the mula for the dsr. Once they hit the staircase then it's rip city. I've had some pretty good days their when they were running, plus it's a nice wide open area to land a fish. Now I'll still pay for the dsr but if I come up for four days I'm not shelling out money for all four days. I know you can still catch them up river but it gets more difficult for sure.

Those that park there please be respectfull. KEEP THE NOISE TO A MINIMUM! Signs go up when tax payers complain. Sure we pump money into the economy but they can vote people out of office.

Drake - thanks that's what I usually did. I would park by the church and walk down to the steps. Funny story about that one year I parked there and left my 400 orvis rod and reel on the steps of the church as I was taking off my waders. Drove off left it there went back to my hotel room never realized it, got up the next morning. Literally as I'm pulling up to the exact spot I parked the day before I looked over to the church steps and there's a rod and reel laying up against the railing. I'm thinking what moron left that there. I look in the back of my suv uhhh were's my rod and reel, oh crap that's mine!! Boy did I feel like an idiot. Nobody touched it all night they must have thought it belong to the pastor.

Walked out back last month to check my funny hysterical non productive Deer stands. Actually saw a track too-WOW.-ONE old track in the hard mud- like a petrified Dinasauer track. WEll- I digress- the issue is that it was the first time in the 4 years that have owned the place that all the vernal pools were completly dried out- I mean they turned to hard dirt. Was nice for keeping the skitos down but told the story bout a dry Summer. It has ALWAYS been wet out there. Thats nature - record flooding now dry as a bone. Yes we will get some rain but watch out cause up there it can RAIN. Would hate to have those floods again. The fish can make it very wel in the 300 or so they are gonna be running- just that a lot get picked off in that low water. From what I have seen over the years the 'pick off' makes little difference- the Hatchery and up river beds get loaded.

Think bout it--- thats whats happenin. Thing is ninety percent of the peeps living there don't make a dime off the fishery. They drive to Fulton or Cuse to earn a paycheck only to have some outta town smucks park in front of their house at 4AM slam the car doors, leaving the CD player cranked, take a leak, yell back and forth while booting up and then walk down to the river. Gee why all the no parking signs. I spend lots of money in the bars, tackle shops aand motels. Thats why! it doesn't matter one little bit if fishermen completely fund the whole town we still need to be respectful and treat the people of the host community like we would want ourselves and our property to be treated....thats the bottom line

speaking of slobs - the area businesses don't show much respect when they JACK UP the prices on everything. yeah I know - the laws of Supply & Demand - reminds me of folks in Florida selling sheets of plywood for $300 b4 a hurricane hits shore...

i learned along time ago respect is always the best way to go... franky i love fishing the river, the fish are awesome and most of the people are great i know i would be tempted to post my land with people doing some of the behaviors i have seen on and around the river so, think, educate and always put a positive spin on things

I do think: I don't dis other's peeps properties, I do educate myself: I buy gas in nearby Richland if I need it, with the exception of All Seasons Tackle Shop & P&C market, I steer clear of every other business in Poooolaski. Positive Spin: you matter how hard you rub it, you can't shine sheet

Absolutley completley agree about respect. Butttt even if ya dont work there or directly make a living off it try and imagine what the taxes would be without the fishery serving business input. Hotels, bed and bkfst, gas stations, resteraunts, tackle stores, guides, etc, etc,- all pay local taxes and school tax too- without putting any kids into the school system. Can guarantee that when guys fishing the Town area start parking coupla blocks away in front of folks houses on a regular basis the signs will soon follow- BET ON IT. Not to mention guys like Dime and I who own places and support all the other businesses generally used by homeowners too. Just think of what it would be like without all that revenue. Got a kids Summer camp on 64 acres right next to me- Kids yellin and screamin all summer - night and day. Staff hollering and cant even get in and out of my driveway during the am/pm drop off and pickup hours. Setup for a coupla weeks before camp and a week after too. Dozers and construction happenin as well as they rent it out for functions on weekends in nice weather- lotsa traffic music and noise. Then there are the other 9 months a year when I can hunt it fish it and use it like my own. I NEVER COMPLAIN - in fact I support them cause the net gain is way ahead of the short term losses. The 'bad- rude' fishermen are most generally there during the Shark season which is actually kinda short when looking at a whole year. Kinda think Pulaski is making out pretty well on the whole deal. Sometimes ya gotta blink a bit- or shoot yourself in the foot. Thats kinda why I'm so anal bout NO signs- if they dont want me around I'll stay up river and spend my money in Altmar and Richland. and thats exactly what I do too. Eyes wide open.

Well said Retired. Why don't the locals by the staircase call the cops for disturbing the peace? The town could make money on fines. And that would educate others to behave or else. Robobuck does a good job on poachers, they end up learning thru their wallet.
Stress is just one hookset away from being gone.

Seems like it is the rude, yes usually shark snaggers, that are the ones doing the foot shooting. RT is there a direct tax those businesses pay to Pulaski? Something like a 1% tax on all tackle sold, bed tax from motels, food sold in resturants going to the village coffers? How much would you estimate the average home owners taxes would rise if the fishery ended tomorrow? My point is not to argue with you but to point out as Bbear did far better than I did that respect goes a long way toward the home owners not complaining that little bit you mentioned. Was the camp there when you purchased. There weren't tens of thousands of fishermen, mostly nice respectful people but with an extremely rude minority, when many homeowners bought there dream on a quiet side street in a tiny village.

Waderboy - what you stated happens everywhere/everytime you pack large #'s of people in a small area- no matter what type of activity it is. Folks that owned property before the train came to town, I feel sorry for, but chit like that happens everyday in many places. IMO - responsible businesses make strong efforts to minimize the impact on local residents (e.g. - trash, noise). Whether we like it or not - the Salmon River is a business, and noone BS'd anybody when it was built to be a business. Pooolaski Chamber of Commerce/Local Govt/DEC region 7 should foot the bill for several things that would alleviate most of the problems - after all - they print up them fancy glossy brochures showing an idylic World Class fishery. You will always have litterbugs, noisy drunks and poachers - if you run a business, run it the right way, or stop crying about the downside when your inaction allowed it to fester. and I don;t want to hear the sob stories about lack of resources these days - because the powers-that-be/were did absolutely squat to minimize the downside when the tills were stuffed not too many moons ago.
