take it or leave it

Gentlemen; I was up in the region for a few days. Although my river time was brief;(we strung 100 20' rafters) I think I can inform some anxious folks who are curious to know...

For the salmon versus carp argument; I've heard both sides... I wasn't there myself so I don't know the actual fact. I was at the rt. 3 bridge this morning and saw NO movement. But; I never conclude with no fish if none are seen...

On the other hand; I was at the hatchery and there were (within my visibility) 5 kings; and an assortment of maybe trout and atlantics amounting to an approximate amount of 10... the water was pretty dark and it was early and overcast; so I couldn't identify some specifically. There was a monster brown in the creek and a fat pair in the ladder. I would assume there was more that I couldn't see. Honestly; I was quite impressed with the kings.

Water levels... im sure everyone follows the usgs; so no need to give flows; but my opinion is there is more than enough water for fish to get in the river. I've seen more fish at times with less water at this time of year. From what im hearing; the late spring we had is effecting the fish in the lake moreso than river flows. "SUPPOSEDLY" last year at this time the lake was a few feet lower than it is currently; who really knows though

Now for my opinion; I think naturally some kings will start rolling in the estuary or atleast circling (as usual of course).... as long as there's 185 flows I think the occasional stragglers and small pods will run the river (as they already have)...

For trout; there were few skamanias in the hatchery. My opinion on this is I think we'll have some whopper steelies coming in with the kings by mid septemberas I've seen that in the past... all browns I've seen are monsters... even the dead ones (winking at tuna)....

Now for waderboy; im sorry I don't know the status on the tarpon; it was quite apparent that the smallies were still around so I had no interest in them. I was pruveleged enough to snag a few of them. I hooked one that seemed to be around the #4 class. He wrapped me around a stick. I managed to unwrap it but while still holding the line in hand; the fish went to run and snapped my 8 lb. test...

I know I owe more than a few of you a pm; tomorrow I should catch up on that....

For vegas; have never been and probably never will

Sorry bout  that Dime-know we were all hoping for a bit of something to start  early here and it seems it aint gonna happen . Saw DSR opening a week later than they planned cause of flow and temps.
Just suggested to a SR newcomer that his best all roud bet would probably be end of first into second week of Oct for all species and good numbers of Salmon throughout the system.
Got me thinking bout how much we all want it start early each year and sometimes a bit of a run happens but its generally pretty predictable a few weeks later on.
Dancin around the pentagram and cuttin off chicken heads  for rain and cooler temps.
Watch- sombodys gonna sey OHMIGODDDDD 5 at the Hatchery -it started -LETS GOOO
Different for those of us with places up there- we go anyhow just to do stuff around the place. For the coupla weekends or one trip a year guys - they gotta play the percentages and go when the goins traditionally pretty good.

You're completely right rt.... no need to apologize thouggbut for myself ; I don't mind putting in the scout time which I did even more before my place was mine....its always good to see the rivers changes each year.... unfortunately I had no time to actually scout where I normally would... the little free time I had went to bass fishing as said. I a m little disappointed with the dsr opening late. They're giving me 4 days only to get my august salmon

Take a look at my post for last weekend Dime. Was the only guy fishing wherever I went or looked.
Know how you feel bout the scouting around too- After the flood last year spent as much time walking the river and tribs  looking around as I did with a wet line.

db sitting here ready to hit the casino floor your repotrt was everything as usual .. 100 20' rafters.. Holy chit man !!
It's mid aug.. low and warm temps with a few stray lake run fish in the race way.. I guess what more would one think ?? Not going to get the fishable (imo) fish in the river unless they are staged off in the lake(starting) and a flow triggers them.. Even if all that happens dont mean they wont belly up from river temps..
Now that is as text book as it gets.. Same ole same ole aug Year after year.
Have no idea how one would many in aug other then a trigger release labor day weekend (if it happens) but I guess you win some you lose some.. Hey I'm in Vegas, I'm gonna hit the jackpot tonight !!!

Not in my opinion. I often see circling fish in the estuary at this time most years than not. And yes; even in low water
    times I have...

Btw; trout are doing very good on the lake....

Sorry to stir the pot a little guys but I'm gonna have to. This 1 here is aimed at tuna And it is regarding august of 98. Just saw a recent post from snagger on the other forum and he mentioned the run of the century came in 98 on august 22nd. Now, being that "he" said that can 1 maybe believe that my estimate of 10,000 running the river in 3 days when I was there that weekend.... or at least maybe there were a few more than 100 dead ones that you saw the following week...... Remember this is light hearted please don't take it the wrong way

Lunch break so here I am..
Dont know what you are trying to explain man.. I WAS there all month ,every day not just driving back & forth on weekends. And YES the river bottom at the bottom of DSR was COVERED with dimebright DEAD salmlon.. The Entire town STUNK from the smell of cooked fish..

I guess you caught a bunch.. so did many others that were around.. Saying that fish in Aug caught can yeild more fish then most in a life time ?? Humm.. Thats darn good .. I dont know or maybe just dont get it .
I would never tell people to go in aug. with any expetations other then try for pike & bass in estuary, learn the river, try fishing down low if looking for trout/salmon, save your money from dsr and have fun at the beach

And thats the last time I'm discussing this further here..

    lunch over

Completely agree tuna in regards to planning trips; was just seeing if I could rib you up off the tables

On the other hand; pike.... I've yet to target them. I have been told that after complete ice out you can hit them in close in the ponds lagoons and inlets. Have you targetted them at this time? In you're opinion, is early spring or late summer better? Thanks in advance...

Im back and geared for another season. Dime from what I can tell according to records I have from 05 on,(yeah I know I need a life), everything is on track with the past. Next week always had small pods entering with some scouts sneaking in this week. Also in 05 the water temps ranged from 72-74 the only difference was that T.S Katrina bumped the flow. Actually in 05 the water temp was 76-77 between Aug. 26-30 and small groups were comin in. Katrina hit on the 30th. Even the drought of 07 had fish movin in about Aug 26th on with a 185 flow and 72 degree water temp. I've caught them earlier and im sure this is not good info for 4hr plus travel gang, but ur right this time of the run is a big crap shoot.
