thanks tuna...THOSE salmon flies my father tied, and btw; that ones an old pic i AM able to tie them myself though. ive been tying for ovwe twenty years now; i like simplicity when it comes to flies; i find they work better that way... just like when i went bone fishing 2 years ago; my guide had one fly with him only and it was a brown shrimp. he laughed while telling me stories of the guys decked out in 1000s of dollars in gear with 500 flies... needless to say, he got me in to an 7/8ish # bone... there is always room for growth though. i tend to tie different patterns every few years or so... most always work. the nymphs in the box to the right in the equipment shot were all tied by me ps... to anyone who's been anxiously wondering, tuna and i hugged and made up via PM...LMAO...

Thanks salmo; Tuna; which box are you referring to; the tubes, hair wings or nymphs? Regardless; the nymphs and tubes get fished on the salmon river. I've yet to hit one on a tube. They are newer to me. They are great flies but IMO they are not the right choice all of the time and I opt towards spin gear in recent years at times where they would produce well. The nymphs are fished hard in winter months along with other typical steelhead patterns. I find the nymphs work great for winter steelhead. I have days in january and february that produce good umbers of fish. I've had fish come up from deep water to smack them and I alwayslove the ones that hit them hard when straight lined on a 3/4 to 100% down stream from you. For the hair wings; I don't use them really when fishing the salmon river. I should try them more often though. My father has gone for atlantics in canada 3 times in the past 5 years. So there's a few boxes of rusty rats, green butts and all types of them laying around.... oh wait; i've done well with a green machine for steelies as well. Tied with spun deer hair or chennille and a white tail; also a smurf which is the same as a green machine but in blue... the white calf tail as a tail seems to do the trick Give me time and i'll post more

This one I call the steel dragon. The chenille yarn is coated with Aquaseal-along with the sili-legs it wiggles like its jonesin' for meth. This I call "the dentist". Its got my favorite trout elements that have served me well for decades. Wood duck in the tail for mottling. Australian Possum because it has a great sheen in the water, brass ribbbing for its subtle flash and palmered starling for a soft hackle-tiny bugger effect (nymph-in- the- round) These both caught alot of fish last winter. I'll probably tie no more than 7 or 8 patterns. Charlie

cool dragon! will try that... Looks like my fox squirrel or march brown wet almost.... For trouts i only use 1/2 dozen or so patterns. for salmon and steel iI play mostly because i spend most of the year thinking rather than doing. tying different stuff helps me cope...

Hey told you I'd get em up when I got back.. well hasn’t been 24 hrs yet and here they are.. the pictures really came out lousy because like said there are better cameras then this..didnt feel like going out in the garage and dig the tripod out either.. so poor pic's it is. they are by no means pro tied, all hand tied by me, every single one has caught a fish for the species it listed under.. some will catch dual species.. However I did not do any pic's of standard trout nymphs which I use more often in cold water temps.. But these all produce.. First up. Salmon: tequila sunrise yellow on black Brown Trout: double egg sperm easy double bead stone Steelhead: iceman minnow little rainbow

Thanks for posting all the flies DB and HT. Gives me more ideas of what works and makes me think about why. I've started to get a handle on what steel do, but, I have no idea what a salmon does, other than go ballistic when it "takes" a Michigan cricket. I got one late Ho last year and it gave me a run down the river on the 7 wt. It was snap it or chase, so I decided to take a stroll . I'd like to get one king on the fly (I caught one on spinning gear/ egg sack in '87) , just because it's another side of a river I've come to love. I can understand why the crowds are there, especially for the slammin'. A friend in Alaska told me it's every bit as bad on the Kenai and showed me the pics to prove it. What size salmon hooks are the streamers tied on, guys? I've been using 4's. That about right? Charlie

Tuna; nice ties. One question with the ice minnow; do you ever get a short strike on that being that its tied on a small hook??? I would be more inclined to tie that on a tube or a longer shank to reduce the possibility... just curious... That double egg sperm is nice; for me, when targetting browns; I throw white in the mix; maybe white hackle on some rather than the orange for me.... I commonly tie different colors of the same patterns with many of my patterns. Especially with nymphs. Overall; id say all of your flies posted would attract all salmonoid species in the river... even some would do smallmouths as well. I am a firm believer in presentation over the actual fly itself. Pulsation is key especially with salmon... I hope this somewhat answers your question fichy. Im looking forward to sitting down and spinning some flies up with you guys in september. A common approach of mine when tying is to always try something different; and most times they always work. This is where I've gained my opinion of "presentation" over "fly"....

I was very un happy with the pic's so got the tripod out.. Yea the sperm fly had white hackle but the orange tends to bleed so in fact it was white.. So here goes.. Only 1 real true salmon fly here and all the others are dual but I tend to keep them seperated by species in my boxes.. Glow Comet, yes this is glow in dark material.. Pretty killer first light.. All my salmon flies are size #4 The double bead stones are so sweet. You can get a mix colors of brass beads.. the beads are really multi color on each one.. The iceman minnow.. It consits of 3 different materials, pink, pearl & blue.. Short strikes ? nah they hammer em' Orange Crush.. again 3 materials, the body is diamond braid ,estaz colar , marabou tail.. Various colors work .. Basically a long version of an estaz egg. Little Rainbow: this catches everything.. It's a staple fly: The Jiggler.. well i'll just leave it at that..

Nice tuna....estaz flies were a staplefor me back in the 90's.... I always pulled crystal flash; z-lon; hi-vis, or glo bog yarn over the back of them as well. I always tied the pull back material to the head and then and then finished it off.... I then restarted at the back of the fly and pulled the material over the back and finished it off and clipped it for a tail. I bought some chartruese estaz the other nightso i'll tie one up and post it later.... blue and red always worked best for me Hey to eveyone; if you go to the speciaties forum for fly tying here on fish usa; view the topics from the last 90 days and you will see a thread called steelhead flies from 2010.... anyone who has a passion for tying will really enjoy this thread. There are some beautiful specimens to say the least.... all should check it out.... Im sure sooner than later someone will bring it back to the top; since erie steelhead is approaching
