Rattlesnakes
I heard this rumor the other day and thought it would make for a lively discussion here. The story is that the Game Commission is dropping rattlesnakes from planes in bags with parachutes. The reason being stated is to control the turkey population to prevent overpopulation and black head. Seems far fetched to me, but... Anybody else heard, or seen, this?

Looks like they are taking a page out of the Ohio DNR playbook. Ohio issued a denial of releasing them, maybe the high wind caused them to drift East to our area. We did not at any time parachute or in any way release rattlesnakes at Tar Hollow. Timber rattlesnakes are endangered, and only found in 7 counties in Ohio. Ross, Hocking , and Vinton are three of them. Tar Hollow lies in all three counties. Timber rattlesnakes spend their entire lives in one den.

I think one of those bags of rattlesnakes must have landed on a deer. See the disfigured doe thread for photos.

I guy told me the other day, that the PGC was introducing Anacondas, to control the feral pig population. I don't know if he's a reliable source. But he WAS drunk, and wearing cammo, so he oughta know.

I did see the black helicopters flying over 2F over the weekend. They were dropping something but I figured it was un-issued doe tags.

that rumor been around fayette for about 6 or 7 years, and i havent seen a rattler in the low lands yet. yes there are rattlers in the laurels , but they been there for years. around here its mostly the coons that get the turkey eggs in the nests. so what if they did let rattlers loose, now we can have snake hunts. they let all these coyotes loose and now we have all these coyotes hunts. it will all work out.

I'm not so sure about the gray wolves. You would think with their size, someone would have seen the parachutes.

I don't think they stock them into new areas at present but they do capture, insert homing chip, and return to capture area to follow their movements. Heck of a note to have the law come knocking at your door just as you were fixin up some strips for supper.

I do not know the backing to the study. However there was a fella with tellemitry equipment studying Massauga Rattlesnakes in Cranberry Twp. Venango County. It has been a couple years since I have seen him. Right where he parks I tossed one off the road a few years ago, and saw a dead one last year. I respect them and don't want to end up on their wrong side. I have come across a few Timber Ratlers over the years and they allways send a shock through me. Where I go in Canada there are lots of Massaugas This year while up there friends warned me that they were out of anti-venom.
