Mouse on a hook

My wife was fishing this weekend and hooked a nice channel cat. After about 2 or 3 minutes of battle, the line went slack. She reeled in and firmly attached to the hook, beside the chub she was using for bait, was a deermouse.Apparantly the cat had swallowed the mouse during the nite and also swallowed the chub on her line. Instead of the hook grabbing the cats inards, it hooked the mouse and, during the fight, both were pulled from the catfish's stomach. Saw that once before ,15 years ago, with a smallmouth and a baby grey squirrel. At least she knows where a hungrey channel cat lives now....WF

I used mice for bait a few times in the past, mostly for muskys. I bought a few at the pet store "snake food", tied a worm hook on, then used superglue along the belly of the mouse to put the hook on. I lobed it out against the dam wall and waited it out.  The mouse would swim along the wall until a musky or bass took it out. Worked almost every time. Kinda cruel but was always a sure bet for a big bite.

agreed, it is cruel.... and stupid..

    use a lure...

It's not like the musky isn't going to eat something alive anyhow. What's cruel about it?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The closer we adhere to the Holy Bible and the US Constitution (as it was written) the closer we get to the model that made America great. The great American experiment worked, human nature just got in the way.

Is it then cruel to use minnows?  How about millworms/wax worms?

    yes/no personal choice...

the trap is a fast killer so not cruel..
and protecting your household is worth any cost...

    I don't know the 2 choices.

    1. Head in trap dead, didn't even get the cheese.

    2. Tied to a hook, one he11 of a ride in the air, and swimming in the pool till I get eaten....

I hope musky eat cats, mice,as long as humans stay out of it...see?

and No, using minnows or insects/grubs isnt cruel because kurt said "fish have no feelings"

    hope this helps

would have helped if you would have said in your opinion...It's the circle of life sir...If you haven't seen The Lion King you should rent that stuff...very educational....

I used to live on a private drive with a 2 acre lake in front. People would drop uninvited dogs cats and ducks off. Well we gained the meanest muskovy duck I ever met. He would steal my labs dog food and I swear he was afraid of him. My wife had a hard time getting to the car. He could put a hurting on ya, either bitting or smacking you with his wings. The kids were scared of him. My wife who is a vegitarian and woulld spend our last dime nursing our pets told me to get rid of it. Well I told her that I would drop it off at the lake-state park. She said no it would traumatize all the children. She had a good point. Well I got to thinking and knew just what to do. We were feeding bears legally back then and getting sone awsome pictures sometimes seeing 7-8 bears per evening. Close by but not that you could see from where we were feeding the bears was a small 10'x15' pond, that the bears liked to wallow in and they still do today. He just loved to fight and I thought he could go out doing what he loved. I never saw him again. I still have a little twinge of remorse shudder through me,it helps to remember the bruses he inflicted on us.

The "would have been" new world record Taimen was disallowed by the IGFA a few years ago cause the angler used a ground squirrel for bait. No mammal meat is allowed for world records. Just saying..   Not sure on PA laws, but no go for records.

Feeder mice are bred for bait. Snake bait but bait none the less. I've owned snakes before, you get over the "cruelty" pretty quick. Cats and dogs are bred and domesticated as pets. Big difference imo . But its all relative. Anyone find anything from pa fish and game about legality of this?

honestly im about 99% sure its cruelty to animals to use mice as bait. it doesnt matter if they are sold as feeder mice because this is an exception for pet snakes.   its not in the pa fish book i believe because they do not make up the rules regarding this issue.

however i might start using tigers because they catch musky for you ;)

I heard that's what they modeled ugly stick tigers after. They sell goldfish as pets but many states use them as legal bait think u'd get double fined w an extra cruelty to animals charge if u got caught w someone's pet goldfish in your bait bucket? Pets are people too u know...

I would be sure to bring this up at your next PETA meeting.  I am sure they would love to know the fate of these poor little mice when they wind up in the hands of fishermen.
