i just got back from the reservoir with my grandpa and it looks about normal. also the river has gone up just a bit also. on a side note, they are now laying the frame on the pineville bridge as i speak. at the last town board meeting in altmar the company that is doing it said it should be done by fall, hopefully not in the middle of salmon season. if i get a chance ill go take pics and post them in a new thread.

Jack you're right. The river shot up to 400 last night with therun off.that's about 150 cfs in run off alone. That should have put a decent dent in the reservoir. Im sure it inticed more than a few stragglers. Now the only question is; will ht take the bait on this one?

I'd say it any way---if there's a thick run of salmon--the steel will b with them or right behind by sometimes hrs or a day--either way that's my target ;=)

Agreed metal; just thinking a once a season kinda guy would maybe not be able to pass on the salmon. .. and yes; the steelhead are always there at that time. I bad a blast with steel down there last mid october. It was funny to see the salmon guys all rigged up still for kings; but there wasn't really any to be found.... hundreds of steelies though....

yes , 2 years ago I spent 2 full weeks guiding every day in dsr at that time . You could watch the salmon tail off (moving in) day by day and more & more trout move in.. That is really an awesome experience.. Last year I did not guide salmon and only fished dsr labor day weekend (2 days, sunday was great) then one day with a friend sept.25th.. Plenty of salmon with a few trout around.... Either way the first week in oct will have a smorgasbord of fish, high and low.. Have a great time !!!

Steelhead fishing is my favorite kinda fishing with a fly rod....I caught a nice 25lb king in the DSR first october weekend last year...Didn't see any steelhead then...But, I'd be happy with few hundred steelies burning up my reel.

what I did for clients was use an egg pattern, that way we caught both salmon & trout and they were very pleased.. So just a tip, you may not the see trout (they hold below & behind the salmon) but will catch both species on an egg pattern at that time.. For specifically targeting Salmon I just use Big comets or Bunny leeches..

I had a buddy with me at the time whois a newbie so I may have hooked more. But based onwhat a hooked and the other"good" anglers that I saw that day; I could assume there were a few hundred steroids in the 1/4 mile stretch we fished. This was third weekend in october last year...

Odds.. lets talk, discuss about odds.. Maybe a different thread ? Sorry to point you out db but it just sparked something about how I hear folks that went 4-12 and even worse.. They are very low odds.. What happened/cause ? Unless I willingly allow a fish to win or they come un hooked I like to keep the odds on my side.. Maybe we can all learn something ..

tuna; no biggie; you highlighting me is nothing new around here lol... So; odds.... I think 4 for 12 that day is pretty good. 1 fish in particular was over 15 and broke me off with a roll and a head shake... 3 of the 4 I landed I had to chase. VERY;VERY FAR... I was using 6 lb. That day... in reality I could've bumped to 8... IMHO; 4 for 12 in 3 hours time is pretty good

Tuna in DB's defense(can't believe I just typed that LOL),I find my landing % on early steel to b lower than the rest of the yr---# 1--they're fresh from the lake and in 50 degree water--you're just along for the ride--#2 I tend to use stronger, cheaper hooks when salmons r around---#3 the types of water 1 would find early steel is diff from trad "winter" lies--this could make em harder to land ;)

That’s cool your good with rolling with those odds (still got Vegas stuck in my head) .. Really at that given time I think the house will win most of the time given that tippet .. So basically you were playing to loose.. Any time until the water temps drop below the 40's (even still) I'm playing to win. During aug > november I wont go below 3x = 8.5 # but even then mainly use 12# spool line or 2x = 11.1# tippet . The fish are actively feeding and not sluggish.. But in freezing 32 deg water I start with 3x = 8.5 and may drop to 4x = 6.2# .. No matter, for the size of the fish that is plenty strong as the rod, side pressure, low metabolism & drag protect the tippet.. In higher water, even higher X no matter the temps. So if a screaming fish decides to head WAY down and a chase is not possible or wanted / they win.. SNAP ! Otherwise it's a matter of the fish becoming un hooked, we all know the leaping ability of fresh chromers.. So maybe put the odds in your favor and one might go 8-12.. That’s fair to me.. No ? Edit: Yes the freshness and leaping ability causing them to come un-hooked I totally agree.. Edit>Edit.. just trying to help the newbies out.. Dont fall into the light line stuff on fall fish..

I ran into a pod of kings in the glide and the little black hole....I was using 12 pound tippet and getting broke off so I switched to 20LB tippet...That was the ticket. I battled that 25 pound king for maybe a half hour cuz I only had a 7 weight rod that was 11 feet long...It had barely enough backbone to land that fish....The kings were slamming brown wolly buggers that day.

As far as being "erie-tized", I am probably giving up on Erie as the crowds are too big, the available water shrinks, and I really hate how the streams have to be timed as their grade is so steep, they don't hold water long.
