DRAKE_ I fish mostly way upriver now and must admit that during the peak of Shark season biters are scarce. Understand the 90/10 thing and know pretty much where I am on that scale but catch Steel as the season goes on and Sharks are scarce though they can be seen all around. Sharks up there have run the gauntlet , like X-Mass trees with the ornaments and guys are chasing them all round. As the season goes on and the crowds diminish and the numbers of fish too, things change dramatically. Most sharks are getting black, dead ones are there and a few fresh ones show up too. Am there all alone on occasion. This is when I have stood there and watched Sharks snap at flies. They are calm and undisturbed and only snap when the fly is right in front of them but the DO grab and spit-even with egg sacs. Believe guys at DSR are getting better biting action on fresh fish having caught them in the past right at the mouth on lures , know they are still biting hard. Point is that it may be like fishing two completely different species depending on where you are fishing. Believe thats why Flossing is popular and why guys resort to it. Sometimes ya just want to catch one and despite all the talk they just aint gonna bite where and when you are fishing under such hard pressure. Ya might have a nice little undistubed yard or two where you are trying and sure as shootin some fool is gonna see ya working it and walk right through it trying to snag. Flossing can be the only way to catch a fish under those conditions and thats why guys do it. Might still 'artfully lift' one myself on occasion. Generally after 4 or 5 hours of skunked fly fishing and just before callin it a day. Then again after thinkin bout it maybe I just go back ta the house for lunch. Then hafta make the decision all over again that evening.

RT - agree with you. The last 3 years, I don't start fishing up there until I can step on a dead Salmon and make it explode into a cloud of mashed potato flakes... I'm just BB'n for the most part. But the comment about a guy spey casting a 14'er into a pack of 100 Salmon - and calling that fishing - was beyond absurd. DB - what size shoe do you wear? I want to gift you a set of Korker sandals with lead weights attached - to keep your two feet firmly planted in reality... your narratives are more polished than the glossy photo-shopped pics I see in the Chamber of Commerce brochures....

RT,I fish the "zones" because of what you just said, people chasing the fish, throwing hunks of lead at them, standing where they should be fishing, etc.Once they get to the "zones",particulaly the UFZ,they settle down and will hit.I have alot of action with streamers up there,as well as the usual glo bugs, large nympths, estaz flys, etc.I fish for the hit and don't "lift",they DO HIT if they are unmolested. Most of the people up there are FISHING for them, not all but most.

Hey drake; why did you pick the most mute point from my post? I was just using jim rusher as a referrence being that he was such an icon when it comes to the salmon river. That day in august 98 he said pointblank that he had never seen anything like it before. That says alot coming from a guy like jim. And as most know him; he was spay fishing up there before anyone was. That's the only reason I threw that one in there. On a different note, I have been digging and trying to find some old fish pics. If I ever get some of them up, you will see my experiences a little more clearly. Everyone speaks of rods bending everywhere in sight and guys screaming up and down FISH ON.... the experiences im referring to are quite solitary with no one in sight. Just give me some time to find them.

Jim may have been just as likely to be throwin a dry fly into them as a spey fly at any given time - He was a fisherman, Pulaski LOST when he moved.

ORIGINAL: dimebrite not the norm pistol; but back in 98 i hit the largest run ive ever seen that weekend... a few others who were around would say that it was one of the largest pushes of fish ever... to make a long story short, it was a memorable 3 days to say the least. since then, there is a little more pressure now then there was then. but i look at it as a nature outing at the least... feel free to pm me... Besides, this was my original post. I clearly stated its not the norm,BUT, I figured id briefly mention my trip in 98. And honestly, I have a pretty high success rates for themonth of august. And I really don't care what anyone thinks about it being to warm and unethical due to warm temps; and all the other yadayadayada that comes along with it. I enjoy the fishing, nature and solitude. Its pretty darn funny come time october when everyone is hooting and hollaring about the crowds and scared to death fish getting pounded. I just sit back and smile because Im done at that point with salmon. PETE; good luck with your trip, and i'll say it once more, regardless of your success, it will still be a nice nature outing either way. Give me a hollar as I will probably be up myself that weekend.... peace

Got a little 'secret spot' up there myself. The water gotta be just right and the pressure a bit down but can go there some days and pilem up. Wellll maybee some other guys know it too as have seen line in a tree or two -but not many and the fish are calm and spawning all over. Some years it just dont happen but when it does - WOW. Dont ask cause i'm not gonna tell ya, its small enough to get ruined by more than a coupla guys a season, but big enough to fish right and have a nice fight. This place had Coho when there werent any.

Dime- Had been goin up for a while before '92' and believe it when they say the 'old days' were something to see. Back for the last coupla years before the DSR the fishing down there was unbelievable. There were actually less guys there then there are now- I always went last week of Sept and always got a nice run or two out of two and a half days of fishing. Those 'runs' were not a push but RUNS that lasted hours. There came a time when fishing really seemed to go downhill so we moved the trip up to mid October to be sure and find fish at least in the LFZ. We moved round a lot in those days tryin to find where fish may be. Thats the time frame when they stopped that silly treble hook snagging too. Lots of cleaning stations and places closed during that period as well. The fishing we enjoy up there now- specially with the variety of fish and their numbers - is excellent. Some folks did a lot of hard work to bring it back.

Never snagged though; my father started around 80 and snagged twice; he shortened my learning curve to say the least.

Recall takin a ride up to N Sandy once in the early 80s, sometimes the fish were up in the fields and it was fun with no trees and lotsa room when the water was right. Well the water wasnt right and that big pool by the bridge was surrounded with guys throwin treble hooks into a huge school of Sharks--bloodbath- Nuff ta make ya sick- even a lifter like me didnt stay long.

I agree that it is an awesome sight and experience, but mentioning a 14'spey rod like the guy was actually fishing is what I found to be comical. I don't care if it was Jim Rusher or George Bush Sr. (who did fish Dougieland once). Tossing a fly into 100 fish battling their way upstream is pure unadultered flossing, not fishing - unless you hit a good sucker run on a Finger Lakes trib... Nothing personal DB - like I said - just BB'n - I gotta give you credit - you do weave a good tale.

Know bout that ' not believed' Dime--Used to tell folks how we did for Blues and Stripers on my boat out in the Sound and they would give ya 'that' look and agree with ya- You knew they thought ya were FOS. Stopped tellin after a while just said 'got skunked again'. Workin a big school at sunup with surface poppers while they chomp and splash through Bunker and the Gulls are goin nutso screaming and swooping down for a piece is GREAT. The absolute fastest fishing out there.

Sorry this was in response to the sandy bridge story. Musta missed that quotie thingie. Been there. Got the tee shirt. They used to tie 6 in of old bed sheet(or one they stole from where they were staying) so they had a visual to know when there hook was at the schools depth.
