Fun Groundhog Hunt

A few months ago, I posted on here asking how to find values for old guns, and pghmarty hooked me up.  The gun in question was a Model 70 featherweight in .243 that I inherited from my late uncle.  Through the website Marty gave me, I found that this gun was made in 1955.  It's got an old (probably not 1955 old) 4x scope on it.

About a month ago, I took it out to fire a few rounds through it at paper.  Only took a couple shots, and was pretty pleased with how it shot.

So, I finally had a a little time this evening to hit a friend's farm for some groundhogs.  1st shot - dead hog.  211 paces.  2nd shot - wounded hog offhand at 51 paces.  Finished him off.  3rd shot - dead hog at 180 paces.

I realize in the varmint world, those aren't really all that impressive distances.  But it was more about the fun of using that particular gun and having it shoot so well.

Think I'm gonna like this gun!!

Glad to hear you had some fun.  I have yet to make a kill with my savage 93 in .17hmr.  Not the biggest calibers for varmits but I dont really care.  Good enough for whistle pigs.

Hoping to get my kids (7&10) shooting it before too long here, and take them out for the mentored hunt during deer season.  They can both handle a BB gun and .22 pretty well.  The .243 will be a sweet little gun for them.

I also got a WWII era .30/06 from the same uncle several years ago before he died.  Been trying to get a deer with that for the past few years, but no dice.  So it will be a tossup for me.  But if they want to work at shooting the .243 and they want to deer hunt, getting my kids a deer is my priority this year.

Had an Uncle who came home from WW2 with a bolt action Japanese infantry rifle, if I recall correctly it was in 7.6. His kids used it as a toy for years and it was pretty beat up-not to mention pencils, crayons and a metal rod all jammed in the barrel,
When he passed the kids were still young and my Aunt asked me to take the gun for safe keeping. I went to work and did a redo on the Jap. rifle carefully removing the barrel obstructions  and a complete cleaning-all original.
The barrel was in surprisingly good condition all things considered. Took it out chucking when I got done and missed everything I shot at. That was just bout the most inaccurate heaviest kicking monstrosity I ever shot. It even still had the Airplane sight for shooting the bolt gun at Planes and was a neat piece of history.
Picked up a bayonet for it and gave the gun  to his oldest son when he turned 18.
