Cat fishing tonight (Allegheny)

Just wandering if my rigs will do ok. This is my first time cat fishin.  10ft. ocean rod 15lb big game top bottom rig 1/0 hooks with dough bait and blown worms, 9ft. walmart special (19.95) shakespere combo 10lb big game top bottom rig 1/0 hooks cut bluegills and chubs. I've only ever fished the surf on the ocean for larger gamefish so thats all the stuff I have. I have my noodle rod steelhead setup for sum active fishing some chubs and jigs for smallies and rockies. Any tips with the setup I'll be using won't have time to go buy anything else leaving right after work to head of to new ken.

10#/15# test is a little small for any serious cats...

.. but on the other hand , when I lived down that way I too fished for the bigg(er) guys with bass sized equipment. Well I think your spot on with "cut bluegills and chubs", I think you can do better than dough bait or nightcrawlers. Either put the cut bait on BOTH rods or fish with someone that leaves a good blood trail, chicken liver.

my experience is that liver is far better in nearly everyway to worms.

--oh and I wanted to quickly add, that for FLATHEADS you better off to keep the chubs/gills alive. good luck.

Your rigs will be fine unless you hook into a real big flathead. I have caught channels up to three feet long or so and smaller flats with less rod and similar line. Hooks will do all right but don't not be afraid to go bigger next time. (depending on bait size)

You will probably want some lead(at least an ounce, more based on current) depending on where you are fishing. I rig mine slip-sinker style, but there are many different ways to do it.

If you catch a rock bass, use one for bait for sure. Great flathead bait. Some serious flat head anglers will even use leagal smallmouth as bait, but I have never gone that big.

To me, it seems like for rods that large you could have gone for stronger line. To my knowledge, cats are not vey line shy. A lot guys who fish for cats (especially flatheads, use braid)

If you haven't cut up the gills and chubs yet, considering using them live as well. I usually use cut and live, sometimes cut is the way to go and other times I only get action on the live ones.

Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun. Let us know how you do.

My fiance landed a 37 " flathead wed night on the Allegheny on a chunk of a crappie on an 8/0 hook w 60# leader and 40# braid w a,2oz bank sinker this is a typical setup for us. Your line and hooks seem a little on the small side but if you use enough weight to keep from snagging you'll be in for a heck of a fight if u get a big flat. Good luck!

The rods and line are fine. I use 15lb-20lb mono and it's fine if you work the drag. I caught a 15lb+ flathead by New Ken on a 6'6'' pole with 15lb. I've also read a ton of catfish info from a guy who swears by 1/0 bait holder hooks. I personally use circle hooks ranging from 4/0 to 8/0.

For flatheads stick with live fish or cut bait. For channels liver always works. For carp stick with dough and worms.

    I'd rather be fishin...
