Peters Creek fish kill

Hundreds of fish are dead in Peters Creek after a water main broke beneath the South Park Township salt storage, carrying salty water into the creek along Piney Fork Road.

Ron Patterson, president of the Tri-County Anglers Association, said roughly $6,000 in stocked trout and other fish were killed after the 48-inch water main broke about 7 a.m. Thursday.

My wife told me that if I didn't stop fishing every day, she'd leave me. Some days, I really miss her.

    I vote for sea trout.

It's funny how whenever there is a fish kill due to the Marcellus, the people on this forum explode in anger. A fish kill due to another matter is cause for joking.

Touche...however, the water in question here is marginal on a good day, from what I've heard (thanks, in large part, to the LAST round of resource extraction to gouge through the area), whereas most of the fracking taking place is impacting otherwise top-notch water, with wild fish.

Even though peters is not prime water it is still a good place to fish.  There are many that put there time and money into that stream.  It is a shame what happened.  Hopefully it all turns out okay.

putting time and money into stocking invasive non-native fish in a waterway where they don't belong is the real shame

The trout are non native but there is a little bit of everything in that creek.  Alot of fish swim up from the river. Bass sauger catfish.  While the stream is what it is I just hate to see a fish kill.  It does not matter to me even if it was just chubs.

as your mother taught you, if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all. if there are fish in the creek and people are fishing there what the h _ _ _ is the difference what fish are in there. as to non-native fish; all, except the first fish that evolved, are non-native to all places at one time or another. logic 101. remember that your ancestors were non-native to this great country at one time. a few trout in peter's is not going to upset the ecosystem there. the trout are mainly stock and take. do those who are opposed to their stocking by a club that supports fishing in general and children's fishing in particular do anything to clean stream's, help kids etc. etc. as the old sayin goes; let those wthout sin cast the first stone! In other words, in my estimation if you have nothing constructive to say then don't say anything. If you have something to constructive to say, then say so

For such a religiously charged post, I'm surprised you talk of the first fish that evolved. Also, good job for taking things out of context, ignoring what people have said, and substituting in what you like to think they said.

You said yourself it's a put and take. So a few months ago, people put in lots of fish that wouldn't naturally be there, and now they're unnaturally taken away. No need for tears and rending of garments and gnashing of teeth.

Also, I'd like to see your source for your assertion that brook trout are not native to this area.

agreed... i think the portion of the kill that involves those fish is very important and not a good thing... unfortunately all anyone was focusing on were an invasive species

I don't get where his post is "religiously charged" and even if it was, being religious doesn't necessarily make one a creationist. I agree with what he said. Point is that the efforts of a well intentioned group of people who are helping to improve the local environment and provide recreational opportunities in the community (especially for kids) were  dealt a setback because of this incident. that indeed should be lamented. the fact that the stocked fish were of a non-native species is immaterial. do you only fish for native species?

    oh, do tell?

In general, I think I am more than helpful when I can be. But, I do respond to some of the "garbage" on here more than I probably should.

So what if Peter's isn't a "prime" trout fishery? Guys/clubs spend a lot of money and time to stock it to provide a fishery for the locals and something bad happens, and you seem to cheer it...

People just think it is crap because it is close, and therefore not worth it.

Same ones will drive for hours to gig stockies at "legendary" creeks like the sinnamahoning, slippery rock, or any other stocked stream in the state and act like they visited the Valhalla of fishing.

If any brook trout or smallmouths died, I hope they went quickly, with no pain.

If any brown trout died, I hope they paid for their crimes.
