Kiski River

This is the third straight week I was able to get out and fish on the weekend, so I took a trip up to the Kiski at Avonmore to see what I could find. This is the first time I fished it, and despite that fact that it seemed like there were some good holes, all I could come up was one small smallie. It was kind of surprising because I expected it to be a little more productive than that.

That being said, whoevers idea it was to put a canoe launch in avonmore is a smart person because it was heavily used. There were at least 4-6 groups that used it while I was fishing.

I've done fairly well with numbers of fish coming up the kiski from the Allegheny smallies rock bass and channel cats. Also in the loyal hanna and conemaugh which combine to form the kiski. So I'd say weather location or fishing pressure played a role in ur lack of success. It is a beautiful river though and that counts for a lot.

I used artificials...stickbaits, tubes, and spinners. The one fish i got was on a yozuri pin minnow.

I'm willing to wager that some of it had to do with fishing pressure. Like a true genius, i waded downstream instead of upstream. that probably wasnt a good idea given the probabability that the first quarter mile or so gets heavily fished by canoers and kayakers.

it is indeed a pretty river, too.

I have gone up about a mile, but I am not sure exactly how far you can go. I am interested to see what other people have to say.

Of course it depends on the boat too, I was in a 16 ft deep V.

Tiny Torpedos and anything that imitates a crayfish have been successful for me. I was up and down the Kiski this three day weekend in a boat from the confluence and up and the deepest I saw on the depthfinder was 6 feet at this time of the year. There is not much fishable structure in the area where I was. A few fallen trees and some boulders but that's about it. Plus that area gets pounded with jet skis and boat partiers.

you know, I thought about trying a tiny torpedo since my girlfriend's dad is a very big fan of the tiny torpedo for smallmouth. It was just about the only thing that I didn't try. Oh well, there's always next time.
