rod question
Maybe you guys can help me out. I have been looking a little bit online for a 10-11' 4-5wt rod. It isn't a must have by any means, I would only use it on 2 or 3 creeks, but it would be nice to get one. I fish some pocket water that one would be perfect for both dries and nymphing. The problem is, that I'm not looking to spend a fortune on it because it isn't really that important, and I can get by with what I have. The market on these rods is through the roof because of the czech/european/whatever the mags tell people to get fad, and everything I see is in the 400+ dollar range. I would like to try to get one for closer to 200. Anybody have any ideas or know any rod models in a less expensive range? Any rod builders out there that can get a cheaper blank?

There is a local distributor that has a 10' 4 wt. just over a hundred bucks, but you have to build it yourself.

by looking online, i actually really meant speed browsing ebay at work.

what kind of blank? Tippe Batson makes an affordable RX-7 10 5wt, but the only thing it is comes in 2 pc.

Batson makes an affordable RX-7 10 5wt, but the only thing it is comes in 2 pc.
The xi. 4pc. Not sure who the manufacturer is, but I was fishing the 9' 5wt. this weekend and will be building one soon. I've had the 6'6" 2wt for about a year. Quick snappy rod with a lot of backbone. I was using some Betts poppers and there was no lack of ability (on the rods part) to bang them out there.

There used to be an ebay seller with inexpensive import blanks. He as in Oregon I think. I got a 10-4 3 pc and a 9'10" 7 wt 6 pc from him. They are moderate actions, and not terribly crisp, but the 4 wt is perfect for what I wanted- high stick nymph and czech nymph rod. It's great for light line (7X) but I've landed trout to 6 lb on it. Worth a look.
Also, there are a lot of 10-11' 4-5-6 wt rods over here. If you can't find what you want, I know you can get them for 120 pound or so (about $200). I'm coming home in July, so I wouldn't be opposed to bringing one back if it was a 4 pc or smaller.

I got & built one of those 10' 4 weights from orgen & it was way to soft for me now I built the XI series from hook & hackle & it is better but still not a fast action but it does fish nymphs pretty good & if you build it is in your price range

Good morning,
In case it was not mentioned.....Cabela's CZN rods may be your ticket at 199.99. They have an 11 foot, 4 wt (and 3 other models) I saw at the Hamburg store. Surprisingly light and not tip heavy. Fast action, too. But I just checked online and it seems like they are mostly out of stock.
Since I build rods I resorted to using a switch rod blank for mine since i could not find an 11 foot blank specifically for czech nymphing. St. Croix 11 foot, 5wt. SCIV/SCII blank is what I used. It keeps line of the water which is why I wanted it. Fast action most of the way up, but the tip is a little soft. If I had the money I would have tried the Sage Z-Axis 11 footer as it weighs about a 1/2 oz less. Good luck.

Apparently Sage is getting rid of the Z axis series, hopefully there is a close out somewhere.
Personally, I was never cool enough to call myself an official "Pennsylvania Czech nympher". This is just another way to release rods with a specific need that you HAVE to have in order to do it right, just like the whole switch rod fad.. to me, It's really no different than a form of high stick nymphing. Through the grapevine Batson is kicking around the idea of releasing a 10' 4 pc 3-4-5 wt series, i'd like to see it, but its hard to beat a Dan Craft for those applications, pricy yes, but they perform very well.
