Yough Reservoir

Wife wants to go fishing this weekend, I wanna take the boat somewhere new. I have been wanting to go to the yough for the better part of a year now, wanting to take on some smallies. Question is, what are the conditions at the yough, is it too high, muddy, etc?

Or, can someone point me in the direction of a nice smallmouth lake somewhat closeby. Hopfully other than Crooked Creek or Loyalhanna.

Just hoping to cover some new water.

Thanks in advance

It should be nice, water level is good, at least it was last weekend. Pleasure boaters still aren't out in full force, so you can probably fish mostly all day on the reservoir. Problem there after memorial day is that by 11 am, so many water skiiers and jetskis it muddys up the shore line real bad.

If you are trying to target certain species this site can probably help you out. http://www.takemefishing.org/fishing/select-a-state/places/state/PA
Raccoon Lake supposedly has smallmouth in it. You could probably fish where the creek dumps in and catch some.

If you aren't sold on targeting smallmouth you could check out cross creek lake. You can get into some nice crappies and largemouth bass. Also a shot at getting a walleye. I've spent alot of time out there and I've never had a bad day.

I have never had a really good day at Cross Creek. Had high hopes on that lake after all the articles I read about it.

Not exactly targeting smallies, I'll fish for anything, I was just hoping to explore somewhere I have never been before.

If you go to the Yough, target smallies. Rocky shores, flooded fallen trees and bushes. Earlier in the morning you can get launched, the better. You'll have your best fishing from dawn until 9:00 am, probably.

I've hit some nice bass throwing spinners along the weedbeds. The crappies will hit on fatheads all day long if you can find them. I will say I've had much better luck heading left out of the boat launch area than to the right.

That may be my problem right there. I usually head to the right, Only one time did I head to the left, but the conditions were less than ideal that day.

The lake is in great shape. The bite has been good early in the day, and a few eyes at night. At 6am this morning their were about ten trailers in the lot, by noon there were none. The lake isnt expected to rise a whole lot so Jockey Hollow should stay open for launching.

If you're not catching bass at Cross Creek you are doing something wrong.

Fished the dam Sunday after the walleye Tournament. Boated 14 eyes only 1 legal 20 inches rest were 10 to 14. This is a very good sign that the eyes are growing from stocked fry to a decent size Got a bunch of perch and crappie . Used jig and crawlers in the trees.

Maybe after the water starts to come down below full pool in the summer but at this time of year there's none I know about.

I've tried to see about access from shore at some of the more remote spots that have a road and cabins but have never had much luck.  The owners seem pretty protective and I really can't blame them especially if they are summer cabins.  With all the crime that goes on I'm not sure I'd want want unknown people around my empty property.

You are correct, I'm one of those owners. Plus there are boats and docks at the lake shore near most people's cabins.

There are very few shore fishing spots this time of year, due to the water level and topography. The rest stop on rt. 40 near the bridge has access, and the various boat launches, but that's about it. Later in Summer and through fall, you can walk the shore all over the place if you're not afraid of steep banks.
