Crazy day

I headed to the mudhole today with my steelhead gear looking for a couple stray steelies or even a couple smallmouth so I slapped on a jig and maggots under a bobber about 3 feet down. First cast my bobber completely disappears. Fish felt heavy but didn't fight like a steelie or smallie. 10 minutes later I landed a 10+ lbs channel cat. I was amazed it hit a suspended jig. Guess what? My second and third casts produced the same results. I ended up catching 4 and losing 1 channel cats and never got another bite. All fish 10+ plus lbs. What a fun surprise!

That's a misconception many people have about cats...many believe they are bottom detritus feeders. In fact, for the most part catfish are efficient predators that often feed on suspending baitfish.

Thats the great thing about cats, you can find them from top to bottom. I've caught them on cranks, swimbaits and pheasant tail nymphs. I caught a dandy yesterday on a pink trout worm, three feet under a bobber in 20 feet of water.
