The top pic was 28 or 29 inches and weighed about 8 1/2 pounds.
If you do a search there are a few threads on "The Swamp".

Big for bowfin IMO is 30 inches give or take. I do not use live bait so givin advise on that would not be my area. Throw bass spinner baits if you are using lighter tackle. I catch so many on musky gear, that i know they will eat big offerings

Agreed....a 30" bowfin is a real solid fish. My biggest to date was 34...and I don't expect to top that.

And they'll eat anything...ya'll are makin too much of this. Only advice is braid or steel leader....they're sharp....trust me

They eat bait.....and spinners....and spoons....and jerkbaits....and rubber worms....absolutely ferocious predators and one of my favorite fish to catch. Pound for pound...meanest fish around.

I don't always snag fish, but when I do...
I choose Little Cleos

I'm the best looking smartest snagging poacher alive...

The swamp is my favorite place to fish in the summer.  I have caught everything you can think of there including last year my son had 2 soft shell turtles on at the same time.  We will go to fish for the bowfins and I have caught as many as 20  in a day.

Wade,

Here is what is says about catching a snakehead:

"Anglers catching snakeheads should dispose of them properly. Anglers suspecting they have caught a snakehead are encouraged to NOT release it, and report it to the Commission at 610-847-2442 or via email."

What are you talking about? This thread is about bowfin, not snakehead. Two different fish.

Good reads guys. heres an interesting note to think about, the Bowfin species hasn't changed in over 250,000 years.

Some days it just doesn't pay to chew your way out of the restraints.

That saw fish episode last week was crazy. Looks like a paddle fish in a way. The main difference is this thing will kill you. :)

yea, I know, but people were confused earlier in this thread thinking that they were supposed to kill bowfin, clearly confusing them with snakehead.

I was just there for the first time this weekend in hopes of catching my first bowfin. Well, I got skunked. There were a bunch of fish jumping, but I think they were carp. There were some other people out and the one guy said he caught one. Ive heard chubs were good bait for them. Are there any good streams in the area with lots of chubs? Thanks

If you want to catch massive bowfin, fish the canals of conneaut lake with live offerings of big minnows, shiners, or crawlers... catch tons of them... also in the marsh areas of the lake on the west side... even fishing the north end boat launch i always seemed to catch them on minnows and shiners... easy pickins...

I caught one in presque isle a couple years back. They look prehistoric. They also look alot like those SNAKHEADS that they are having all the problems with down south.

Stripers are pretty strong, but Bowfins are pretty close, right up there in my book.
The one in my above post was 28" & it put up one heck of a good fight. Plus with all the weeds in the swampy areas they like to inhabit, you got to put the muscle to them to keep them out.
