How sad is it... last night, I'm at work, got out of unit in parking lot to back into bay and I am eyeing up all the nightcrawlers on the pavement from the rain and wishing I had a decent container and wasn't stuck at work for another 9 hrs....

Geesh... spring REALLY needs to get here!

I filled my box up too, can't wait to use them

I'll sell them the same way I sell sweet corn.... pick your own....

My blacktop driveway was covered with them this morning. Small ones though, not the big nightcrawlers.

We do catch our own most of the season.... the only trouble we have is that we can't go outside at night without an escort... 2 or 3 cats and usually at least one dog who apparently think I'm going to either get lost without their guidance or, heaven forbid, do something fun without them!
But, yes, warm weather night crawler hunting is easy and a heck of a lot cheaper by the dozen!

The latest issue of Field and STream had a tip for catching crawlers.

1. Pound copper bar or rebar 8-10" into the ground, 2 rods about 3 feet apart.
2. Hook jumper cables to the bars
3. walk far away and hook the other end of the cables to a car battery.
4. wait 1-2 minutes and unhook the battery.
5. there should be dozens of worms crawling to the surface.


Someone try it out and let me know if it works.

Yep E&G... I know exactly where you are coming from... but even with their 'help' I still manage to catch a few and get a good chuckle out of them at the same time.

I'm glad your kids are out 'helping' you though, pretty soon they will be out catching you and having fun doing it! Kudos for you for letting them 'help' you out!
I remember going out when I was a kid. I rarely wore shoes during the summer (except for church or grocery store days) and to this day I can distinctly remember those summer nights and the wet grass on my feet, I may have been 50/50 on my catch rate but I had fun. Kids getting a chance to experience that is becoming a more and more rare occurance, unfortunately.

I remember dad used to have me look on one side of the yard and he'd go to the other. We'd have a contest to see who could catch the most. He won for a few years until I learned to walk softly. LOL Also, if you use a red lens over your flashlight it helps as well.

My grandfather was a fox...he would ask me if I wanted to go fishing..of course I always said yes...
he would say go dig in the garden and get worms. After I got a few I,ld ask if I had enough...he would
point to another spot and say dig there...After many shovels full of dirt and sifting he would say ok.
After fishing for suckers he,ld plant some tomatoes. I miss that man...:)
