Took the afternoon off last Thursday (5/26) to fish the Yough above Jacobs Creek. USGS gauge had it looking decent. Guess what ? High and badly off-color once again. Managed one Brown. I'm on the verge of giving it up for the year on that river. It has SUCKED. Now, it's still high and the temps are turning to the 90's. Honestly, I feel bad for the local clubs that work so hard to get that river stocked, only to have the fish go to waste for the most part. I know I'm venting, but I'm just totally disgusted this year.

Ugh, and this next system is supposed to hit hard South of the Mason Dixon tomorrow, which means more water for the Yough.

I feel bad for the local clubs and all, but there is a reason why the PFBC doesn't stock it with trout at a certain point. The Yough is a tremendous small mouth fishery, probably the best in this part of the state. I wouldn't get too upset for it not being something that it isn't...

Actually, the PFBC doesn't stock it at all save for a 500 or so yard stretch from the Dam to the RR Tressle in Confluence, and some fingerlings around the Ohiopyle area. That said however, the Yough is an excellent Trout fishery in the lower boundaries (where the clubs stock) 8 months out of the year, and the Trout fishing pumps some much needed revenues into the sleepy little river towns that line the river. I'm no pollster, but my guess is that the Trout fishing adds more revenue than any Smallmouth Bass fishing.

I'm sure it does stimulate the economy a bit. Although, I am pretty sure that most of those fishing the Yough for trout, are local, that would likely be spending their money on something else in the local economy if not fishing for trout. I'd also assume that the Summer months have much more of an impact on the local economy from "out of towners" than any during the "trout season". Whether anglers are specifically targetting smallmouth, they are the fish usually providing the entertainment and bringing folks back for another trip during the Summer months. I am by no means against the idea of sportsmens clubs stocking. I have paid for over 10 buttons to help support their causes in the past. I also found myself only able to make it 1-2 times out per season, due to high water / weather on my free time (mostly weekends). I would always find myself (imagine I am not alone for folks living 20+ miles from the Yough) fishing more in the warmer months than the "trout season". I am just stating that the characteristics of the Yough are ideal for warm water species, and expecting them to be ideal for cool water species fishing during the Spring (historically high water) is a bit much to ask of Mother Nature IMO. The historical flow charts and historical weather data suggest it is the norm, that most of the Spring to be higher or not ideal fishing weather than it is ideal wading/fishing conditions. That said, the Summer would be more ideal than not, which just happens to be when the smallmouth are active. You can substitute smallmouth with any warm water species. I was just referencing them, since the lower Yough smallmouth fishery is that good, that it could be a destination type fishery. There are a ton of other warm water fish, many in great numbers and habitat is great as well.

I know I'm changing topic a bit but I was thinking about renting a canoe and doing a float fishing trip on the bottom yough from whitset to west newton. My wife may come with me but she gets worried about rapids(she's been reading about people falling into rivers and drowning). Are there any rapids in this section of the yough does anyone know?

no rapids in that section. do wear a life jacket to be safe because canoe are easy to flip. i would recommend a tandem kayak for better stability, especially for novice users

Well the "storm system" that was supposed to hit last night and this morning was a bust...that's a good thing. Maybe the river will cooperate for later this week and into the weekend?

Talked to one of the rangers at the dam. Water levels should be down to normal summer pool in the lake by tomorrow. They will slow the discharge after that which should help with the flow down below.

Fished West Newton on Wednesday evening. Only cauught one brown and a bunch of rock bass. Only a couple fishing and not much catching. Not sure where everyone is getting "high and muddy". There was at least 3-4 foot visibility. Not necessarily clear, but more like a ligh tea color. Also flow was pretty good. Of Course the flow could change depending on dam release but color should be absolultely clear by weekend with no rain in site.

Knfanning, No "rapids", and if memory serves correctly, the only place your wife may get black and blue eyes would be under the Smithton bridge, which gets just a but bouncey for about 50 yards or so.

Haha, it's one of those things where if she knows it's coming she'll be a wreck till we get to it but if it just so happens to be around the bed then she'll still be a wreck but it'll be short lived. We did the middle yough together and she made it through allright so she should be more than allright with this section.

I don't get how you can say the Yough is "ideal for warm water species". The temps of the Yough are some of the coldest around, and are under 70 degrees about 10 months out of the year. Temperature wise, the Yough is an ideal cold water trout fishery.

The "top" section is colder whereas the "bottom" section is warmer. That was my understanding of the river.

From a couple miles downstream to Connellsville, not as much. Below Connellsville, definitely more warmwater fishery than coldwater. An "ideal coldwater fishery, in my opinion, never gets above 70 degrees.

Fished the Yough last evening at South Connellsville. The smallmouth are hitting good. Caught most on a jerk bait. The water level in Connellsville is just where I like it; just under 3 feet.
