Trout fishing Elk

Hey guys I'm looking for some info.  I've always fished opening day of trout down here around Pittsburgh but I've been thinking of fishing Elk Creek this year.  Don't really have a reason other than I'd like to catch some steelhead along the way as well.  My question is do guys really do any good down near the mouth?

Elk on opening day can be crowded.  You have the usual steelhead guys and then the trout fisherman too.   There are trout in the stream.  Come on up and join the fun...  Good luck.

Please be advised that Elk is the creek that is stocked!  Walnut is NOT stocked.  Some of the other streams used to be stocked but I don't know about this year.  Read the stocking times to find out which ones.

The noodle rod would be a good choice.  Opening day is quite the event to behold.

Opening day can be a zoo.  There are a lot of people who come out to fish and it is not for the "serious" fisherman...  I personally don't fish opening day anymore because I prefer a more quite time on the streams.  At one time I was very critical of those who would want to join into the crowds, but as I get older I find if best to live and let live.  If you enjoy opening day of trout season, then have a good time.  Life is too short to go through it worrying about what other people are doing.

lots of nice peaceful streams around if you dont mind not having the chance at a steelie or two...i always pick one for opening day and then early sunday morining on upper elk and do really well on stockies and usually a steelhead mixed in here and there...the earlier the better on day 2 as you can beat the crowds to the upper areas (mckean, rick rd, sterritania, struchen flats)

It's not how deep you fish...It's how you wiggle your worm.

I have been in the habit of fishing the Friday night before the first morning at the edge of a special regulation section (usually DHALO).  Those areas are usually loaded with stocked trout crossing the borders.  Then I sleep in the first day and usually take a drive just to see the circus.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to target both trout and steelhead at the same time.  If you take your trout rod, your going to have a chance at breaking it by hooking up with a big steely.  If you take your steelhead rod, your going to be catching little pellet heads on a big rod and barely feel them.

Steelslayer...my reasoning is I've always loved trout fishing and that lead to my starting to fish up erie for steelhead just last fall.  So why in the world not combine them both?

Used to take my kids and we would hit the rapids below the stocked holes and clean house on live emeralds.

I got nothing against pellet heads.  Truth be told, I still enjoy catching them..  Just don't like to sit a bridge with 100 of my closest friends to do it.  I'm just upstream of the McKean hole a mile or so.  After the initial scramble, I do make way down there for a brownie or two.  I'm hoping for a mild blow-out the night before.  Sorry first day guys.  Keeps fish later in the season and helps spread them a bit more.

For rods, I definitely go for the fast action, 6' ultra light.  Sure you might not have the stank for a hot steelhead, but better for main target.

I may have to head up just to go to Walnut.  I'm actually amazed at the number of people who go there expecting fish and then complain when there aren't any.  I'll bet one year there were 200 folks from Manchester, down.  And all chasing the 1 or two fallbacks.

BTW?  How are they allowed to stock 20 mile?  Fish Comm regs prohibit stocking within a certain distance above and below posted waters.  Which would make it about the lake front and right below the cabbage patch.
