Was out on the allegheny and got three in the 20 to 24 inch range and lost one that was bigger. Their where 5 boats and the bite was slow.

I stopped by lock 3 and under the Tarentum bridge this morning to take a look. --I had not looked at the online gauges since Sunday-- Lock 3 was very high and muddy, the barge was not visible and the water was high on the rocks. Under the bridge looked a little better but the water was still high.

Yeah, just when it was starting to get fishable and I was starting to lick my chops, the rains came and it shot up like a rocket. The ground is still saturated so everything ended up in the rivers...

More rain on the way, too.

Looks like I'll be heading to a few small lakes this weekend if I get the chance to try for some crappies...

The Mon seems in better shape than the Allegheny. I wanted to go this weekend, but it looks like another wet one. Might have to take off tomorrow and get this out of my system.

River was finally coming down to a decent level earlier this week.  The monsoons over the last few days have done their damage and it looks like we are still a little ways away from good flows

At this rate, we will be lucky to be fishing decent flows by the 4th of July....

The Allegheny is still a debris filled, raging chocolate torrent.  The Ohio looks even worse although I am not surprised considering it was just at flood stage a few days ago.

The USACE reservoirs need some dry weather to allow them to get back to normal summer pools.  Until then, they will continue the large discharges and the heavy flows in the Allegheny and Ohio will ensue.

I saw that a chance of rain exists for the next 10 days.  Let's hope it is nothing major and we can finally start getting the boats in in another week or so.

well kinzu plans to put their discharge at 20000 for the next couple days so that means that the allegheny will be nasty for another week or so.  does anyone have any information on how the mon looks

Looks pretty crappy still. I ride the T into work downtown every day and I cross over it. Usually when it's normal I can see the bottom like 5-10 yards from shore but currently I don't see it even inches from shore.

The walleye are definitely hitting in the flood waters. You'd think that we were doing some big river fishing where we were at on the Allegheny. I couldn't believe what the water and dam looked like. We were actually casting out to small trees and brush that were half submerged on the rocky beaches. A whole group of us had them coming in on shiners. We only fished for a few hours, but the 5 of us caught about 6 all together. Most were small to mid size with very little girth to them. The biggest one was 20" with some nice filets. We were catching channel cats too so it was a nice little venture.

When in doubt, throw bait out.

I'd rather be fishin...

RE: Walleye fishing the 3 rivers 2011/06/01 12:27:57 (permalink)
We've been getting into fish in good numbers, that is when you can get to the river and actually fish! Plenty of bass right now too, mainly in the 12-15 inch range. We've gotten into good numbers of walleyes too, but majority of them are on the small side 12-14 inch range.

I had a real nice surprise while fishing the river last night--I was throwing a jig and 3" gulp and on my first cast I hooked something with some serious weight! I knew that it couldn't possibly be a walleye the way it was fighting, so figured it was either a big drum or cat. Well 25 minutes later my suspicion was confirmed when I hoisted the fish in--was a very large flathead! I'm guessing it was ~34-35 inches long and prob 20+ lbs. Wish I would of had a camera to get a few pics, but the thing sure did put up a good fight in high water on 8lb test...

I was catfishing tues night on the Allegheny and the guys fishing next to my group said they got a few eyes ... the flathead I caught looked like he could have easily been catching a few nice eyes himself.

Anyone have any places they'd like to share where to shore fish for walleye on the Mon?  The only place I even know to shore fish is in Braddock and I've never picked up a walleye there.  A buddy of mine caught a 32" eye there one time but that's it.

Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.

You can try the area across from the Waterfront. Crossing bridge from Homestead into Pgh take the first right.
