Arthur is a great shore fishing lake. Just should take some waders since some of the good spots aren't real accessable and if they are they get crowded. If you're hearing plenty of alewifes where you're fishing, at some point there will be game fish coming in. Bombers, skitter pops and prop baits usually seem to be the ticket. something with blue and flash if you can find them. If you've tried to wait them out till 2 am, and you still don't hear any big fish coming up, then maybe then try another spot.

I wouldn't night fish Arthur without waders. I rarely go deeper than my hips, but turns about 100 spots into 100,000 spots to fish from. Go to the crowded spots and join the crowds for a night. They are crowded for a reason... It might not be the fishing that you want to be doing, but you'll likely find a spot to cast comfortably from, even if it isn't the hotspot that one of the guys is fishing from (likely started fishing at Noon to save the spot). At the very least, you will see a few fish being caught and they'll very likely make their way past you. Take note of where you saw the fish at, and find similar spots on the lake. Just be careful, since some areas on the lake are not very easily accessable, and the ticks are bad this year if you go for it and hike through the brush. The bike path is your friend!

Find the alewives and fish there.Have patience. You're not gonna get one on every cast. One thing I noticed is that the bite gets later and later at night as the season goes on. Put your time in and eventually you'll get into them.

I've noticed the same as Chris. Always though it was opposite of what it "should" be. I think it's the nature of the fish ( which is to eat alot, and eat often ). Cooler temps cause them to eat more during the day, and delays their nightime appetite.

They give you fits sometimes. I've had them jumping all around me and not a strike.I have a few daytime spots but they are only good when the alewives are around.

Even when the fish are "on", it usually takes a good 20-30 casts per hookup, 100+ if they aren't. Although there are times where you'll hit them on consecutive casts if you are lucky. If you start fishing at 9-10PM, consider yourself lucky to land one in your first few hours of casting. This is definitely not bluegill fishing, or even steelhead for that matter. 10+ fish nights is not a reality for most, and pure luck for guys like me that aren't on the lake every other evening. I have a few buddies that have been fishing for them for 7-8 years, maybe only 2-3 trips per year, who are still yet to land one over 18"...

As mentioned by luvinbluegills, there are a few other waters in the general area that will hook you up with wipers much easier than Arthur. Although, the average size on Arthur is bigger. Arthur has a bit more peaceful surroundings. There is also something enjoyable about hearing/seeing the fish bust the surface too.

Got three more eyes yesterday evening. Fished for 3.5 hours but got all of the fish in probably the first .5 hrs time, then we didn't mark squat. It's been like that all year, which is uncommon and we can't figure it out. Also, our "go to spot" for stripers for the past six years has been terrible so far compared to past years. So my question is has anyone else noticed any wierd trends fishing this year, mainly due to the goofy weather, or do you think it's still a couple weeks behind previous years?

Porktown, thanks for putting it all in to perspective.

Been going up 4-5 times a year for a few years. Only caught about 5.

Reading crappiefisher's post all the time had me thinking i was doing something wrong.

Dude could open a commercial fishing business from the sounds of it.

Okay, Stripers out at Moraine for prime time this year, has come and gone. The best time is when the lake heats up for the first couple of days and the first clear nights. We have had no moonlight and lots of cloud cover. So I would reccomend checking out the moon phases. I know people say this is garbage but I trully believe that its the key.

Crappiefisher can literally crawl to the lake from his house, faster than most on here could get there in a helicopter! He knows the lake about as well as anyone. Him and a few others on here can tell you exactly what they are doing, and 90% of us still couldn't catch as many. It really does come down to the micro details, that only trial and error over years can refine. That all said, there area at least 2 others in his own house that seem to consistently out fish him!

Hello Fellas,

Its been a long time since Ive posted. The kids have been keepin the wife and I busy.

You guys are spot on when it comes to Chris. That guy understands the lake and his boy Timmy also does quite well. Those two have helped me out immensely and I havent even spent that much time with either of them. They are no bull**** fishermen and what they share with us is spot on. Thanks again Chris and Tim.  I love that lake!!!

My brother-in-law and I last saw Tim in the early spring and he gave us some good tips on fishing the alewifes which have finally aloud us to hook-up on some nice byrds. I landed a 9.5lb fish last week. We had our first double as well this year but Bill lost his during the battle.  Headin out tonight if weather holds up.

Now if I could only get em to eat the lures consistently. It almost seems as if lures work better just before the bait come in but Im amateur and only guessing at this point. Tight Lines all.

I surely wasnt knocking him (crappie).

Happy for him, and jealous too.

He has helped me in the past. Just frustrated with figuring out the formula.

Was just wondering how others wiper bite has been recently since there hasn't been many replies.  I have been out a few times but it seems that action is less plentiful, maybe the starting time is changing

Boy Chris,

I wish I'd have read your post before I headed to the lake this evening. Upper 528 was even fairly crowded. Tried deeper crappie fishing since it is aggrevating walleye fishing for us when it's 10 mph wind. Just anchored for a couple hours in one of the spots we found during ice fishing last year. Caught a bunch of crappies in 9 feet of water. Only four keepers, but we got a couple real nice largemouth, two nice catfish, and a couple breakoffs. Probably got 20 little crappies. Ran out of our three dozen minnies in probably the first hour, so it slowed after that. Chris, I bought about 300 of those spinners that we use. I'll tie a bunch up and leave some with you next time we go out in case Timmy lets you guys go for walleye instead of bass sometime. :)

RE: Lake Arthur..... 2011/07/01 00:13:26 (permalink)
Thanks crappie no biggie on the pm.  I have a question that you may have the answer to.  3 of us have been fishing this one spot that I know is a good spot that always has bait and byrds.  This spot produces all year from the early season to very late into the dog days of summer.  Now this year the fish have been smaller at this spot as compared to last year but in the last 1-2 weeks there is hardly any bait or fish.  As a group we have about 30 wipers, 3 walley, a few bass but in the last 3 outings just about skunked every time.  Not sure what is going on, and I know this spot gets very little night fishing presure other than the 2-3 times a week we get together and go.  If you could help me out I am looking to try some other areas to fish for wipers from shore, wading is all we do.  I like to keep out of the main areas to stay away from the crowds and walking up to 20 min to get to a spot is not a problem since the spot we fish now is around a 15 min walk.  We mostly fish lures but some alewifes.  What lures have been working best for you?  If you would point me in the right direction to a certain location or if you know why all the sudden the fish are not coming into my spot it would be greatly appreciated.  So if you want to send me a pm that too would be fine.  Thanks in advanced.  P.S. I enjoy reading about your wiper success if you could post some pictures of your largest wipers that would be great.

Was that pre or post glory days there? I haven't fished there in 2-3 years. Not the same commute that it used to be, and no where near the bait fish attraction that it used to have!

Definitely pre-glory days. It still produces but like you said, it's nothing like back then. I think it could be recovered though, if enough of us pony up the cash for a backhoe and town council gives the ok. ;-)

Count me in, especially if I can drive the backhoe for a bit! Those were definitely some good times. It would be nice getting that place back to the way it was.

Im guessin the cooler nights this past week killed the bite. Our honey hole def. slowed. Feels Like August nights instead of June.

Caught a few very small wipes last time out. Topwater action very quiet. We fished till 2:30am.Had one really nice bite and then the line went slack after the fish tested my drag for a spell. Im thinkin cat cause we got into a few of em this trip.  Just kept peelin line. That was my entertainment for the night.

Chris,

Thanks for the heads up on the tour. How did Tim do?

Got a few of those lures and have tried em, gonna have to give em another go but those fish must really hate my retrieve. Meat has been good until last week. Didnt even think bout gut hookin them fish since our set-up has been workin very well. All fish have been hooked solid in the lip or mouth.

Gonna be gettin the yak out soon, havent been in it yet this year at Arthur. Been neglecting the LMB pop. this year. Been to busy dreamin bout Big Byrd.

Have a Happy and Safe Fourth all.

For the last few years I thought that I had the secret weapon, even though I never tried it myself because I no longer have a boat.I kept waiting to hear if anyone was using live crawdads as an old timer assured me was the best bait to use. He assured me that when he & his son were out that they would get tired of catching the hybrids with them. Now that Crappie admits to using them I guess it is true.We used to catch them on chicken liver when my son was stationed in Texas, while in the Marines. Never know I guess. sam
