Albino Stone Tute
some say that a stonefly will molt as they grow and turn an off white color. i've tied these, changed it a little to my liking, and it has worked when i'm out of options.
this fly doesn't take a lot of fish but i have caught one or two in a group that wouldn't take anything else.
i keep a few always with me.
DT Albino Stone hook; 3x curved #10 or #12 (#10 pictured)
thread; white #6
tail; two grizzly stripped hackle stems split
lead; matchstick lead cut to length.
rib; mono line 12lb of substitute
abdomen; off white. i mix white with a bit of light yellow fur dubbing
wing case; pale turkey feather section laquared
legs; grizzly hen hackle trimmed top and bottom
antennae; two wood duck flank fibers, split
thorax; same as abdomen
material;
1. base thread over hook shaft and tie in split tail.
tip; using a dubbing ball helps when tying in split tails.
dubbing ball
tail
2. lay matchstick lead atop hook shaft as shown.
substitue; you can tie in lead wire to each side of hook shaft.
this gives the stonfly a flatter appearance
3. tie in mono rib
4. dub abdomen, spiral mono rib forward and tie down.
5. tie in turkey section for wingcase. the shiny side up towards back of hook
6. tie in wood duck fibers, split, for antennae
7. tie in hen hackle for legs
8. dub thorax and make one turn of hen hackle forward and tie down.
trim top and bottom before next step or after fly is done.
9. fold wingcase forward and tie down behind eye of hook.
whip finish and trim fly to liking.
