Foul Hook

caught a few and foul hooked a few today on middle elk. I always practice C&R, but dont like to  play out snagged fish, but I also don't like to decorate any fish either since this often leads to more foul hooks for other anglers and can be counter-productive for C&R. Do you folks ever play out your fouls to save your rigs and keep the fish "clean"? What do you folks do?

Usually just grab the line and point the rod at the fish and pull. Half the time the fly comes off, half the time it stays in the fish. Don't foul that often because in Pa, I fish straight up and down, no 8 foot leader below the indicator in a run 3 feet deep. Also don't use tandem rigs in a run packed with fish, also lift gently at end of drift- if I feel the fly hit a fish I can wiggle it off most of the time

I mostly sight fish and watch my fly/bait so normally don't snag but when I do I snap the line in the opposite direction and usually come loose. If still hooked I point the rod as Glen and break them off. Saves both time for me and those around me and stress on the fish.

I play the fish out as  I've got to get him pretty close to not ruin a fly leader.

I foul hooked a fish today, tried the "point the leader at the fish" strategy and out popped my fly! Of course, the fly also popped out when I had a good fish hooked right in the kisser...... sometimes I hate these stupid fish.......

All good advice, if I can land the fish quickly I will try not to decorate it. But if it is going to run and disrupt a lot of other anglers and also tire itself out to near death, then I will quickly try to pop it off. If that doesn't work, break it off. Flies/hooks are cheap. Basically what ever does less harm to the fish.

    +1!

I play them out...however, when using 12lb mainline and 8lb flouro leader most of the time, I apply good side pressure and they come right in within a minute or so. With that said....I probably landed 20+ feesh yesterday - 0 foul hooked. They usually want to EAT what I'm offerin'

I wont use the product name, but have any of you used weighted, colored bead set-ups that have the empty hook 4"-6" below them? Based on experience and conversations on other posts, would you guys consider such a rig? Wouldnt a set-up like that induce more lining and snagging as opposed to true takes?

great, thanks for the input. I just never saw an empty hook rig like that until a google search led me to a particular video site that also sells the beads. The whole idea of lining perplexes me anyway. A well drifted and good intentioned hook in the mouth is a hook in the mouth. It's the folks ripping hooks through the water that fry me.

Beads are very popular in new york also. I use beads and fish will eat a bead 2-1 over glo bugs in my experience. Ive never set a bead 6in from the hook before usually only 2 inches or so.
