I don't know anyone that spin fishes because it's a "challenge"

I could show you lots of challenges with a spin rod. For instance, someone else on this thread asked if they ever had a steelie take a surface fly.

Yes, I have. Many. I've also had them take a surface fly, fished on a spin rod, without the use of any float or bobber.   Not even going to try and explain it on here.  I'd be glad to demonstrate sometime and then you can let me know if you find it a "challenge" or not.

Like to see how you even cast that... stop sign hole doesn't count

It can be done.  I do use 1 bb2 blackbird shot far several feet up the line from the fly.  Most of the surface bites you'll get are in shallow tailouts, so no worries about it sinking the fly, and while I've caught fish with it totally float the first few seconds it's on the water, I'm not dead drift it, but skating it across.  But anyway, I can probably get it out there about 30 feet without wind.

Kinda funny that to get a challenge on a spinning rod, the mind turns to using flies...

Can you do it on a snoopy rod?

Going to have to try it.  Would the stop sign hole count if I'm using a dry fly on a snoopy rod?

I did it backwards like someone else said. When I was about 8yrs. old my Dad and Grandpap would take me and my 3 brothers fly fish'n. They even took us up to "Fisherman's Paradise" a few times. Of course we spent most of the day get'n our lines out of trees. As I got into my teens I liked the spinning rod and reel better. I liked the big handle and that drag scream'n when you got a good fish. I asked this question before. If I am using my noodle rod and throw a wolly bugger, am I fly fish'n or if I have a fly rod and throw a single egg, am I a bait fisherman??? One more thing. A guy will say something about fly fish'n and another guy will say he's a sprey or pinner. Are you not, still a fly fisherman?

My Wife said, if I go fish'n one more time, she'll leave me! God, I'm going to miss her!

I use whatever works for the day/whatever i find most fun that day. Unless I break my fly rod on my first cast the day before the onefly. Then I fish the noodle exclusively!

Exactly!

After all, no matter what you use, is it really such a huge accomplishment to fool something with a brain the size of a pea? I like catchin' feesh, but I try not to hurt my shoulder patting myself on the back about it.

this thread is old, but i sure enjoyed both the answers and the banter. though i have fly fished a bit over the last few years, i still am more comfortable with spinning gear. most times, the challenge is minimal, except when working a specific fish in difficult cover, and while i will give you fly guys that fly fishing is way more challenging, at this point in my life, i just want to have some uncomplicated fun, to catch a few fish, and enjoy the scenery.

Whoa...

I worked 'backwards' as well. I didn't use a spining rod until my early teens, and didn't use a baitcaster until I lived down south years later. Now a days it's the spinning rod 90% of the time.

We hunted small game growing up. So, I own a 12, 20 and 410ga.

I have in my possession a Fenwick "SpinFly", two rods in one! My son picked it up at a swap meet. Never used it, probably won't. I'm just starting to tie dries and emergers for the coming season. I use a fly rod for mostly everything, but I am going to pick up a couple new spinning rods for a trip to Arkansas next May.

When fishing I like to use a pole-like device with a small cranking mechanism mounted on it which is fitted with a line of some sort. It seems to be pretty common practice and it works great!

I'd rather be fishin...

"Spinning gear is the choice of all serious Walnut snaggers."

That's honestly probably one of the dumbest things I've seen posted on this board in awhile... and I've seen alot of dumb stuff.

Out of the dozens (maybe hundreds, who knows) of foul hooked fish I've seen this year, I'd say as much as 95% were snagged with this formula:

-Idiot
-Flyrod
-Stupid yarn fly
-Bunch of shot
-A 6 ft leader from "fly" to beachball float
-2 ft of water
-lots of fish
-Poor drift fishing ability altogether
-ect

Then again, I've seen alot of NY style chuck and rip goin on this year too.

croation,

when referencing tim returning to his roots, that meant surface flies so I don't think you'll be making money on any type of indicator.

seriously,

i would love to see anyone on this board come fish the place i referenced with a spin rod or pin in the late spring...

Did you interview all the fish caught in the chutes to confirm if they were being lined or actually eating?
While I see your point that the chutes sees some lining, I'm not ready to begrudge anyone who's fishing there. Sounds like spin fishing snobbery to me.
I know this because I have an "elitist meter" on my computer. It was off the charts as I read your post.

I didn't read the other posts yet, so forgive if I'm being redundant..

i was  "bi-anglular" for many years....meaning I fished a spinning outfit using bait or flies .
I always took several different baits and a box or two of flies .

some days flies out produced bait, some days bait out produced flies ...I learned eventually that it's MOST about the presentation  ..."presentation"  includes drift/movement , color, size 'n shape, etc

the "challenge" whether spin or fly is to find the right combination of presentation factors  on any given day

for the record, i fish with a flyrod 99.37% of the time for steel..cause I reached the limitations of what can "easily" be done w/spinning outfit  to manipulate  the junk on the end of my  line .....especially with light/tiny junk .

There are  times i wish I had a spinning outfit with me though..in particular pockets of water on the other side of larger  creeks with several contrary current speeds  running in the creek from me to the pocket ....makes it near impossible (for "me") to mend line properly for the "right" drift in the pocket.

with long rod and spinning outfit, you can drop your junk in the pocket and keep your line mostly off the contrary middle currents

I've said it before and will say it again, many (most?)  of the duuds i see on PA tribs fishing  with flyrods would be better served with spinning rods

but I've also said this and will say it again, the "best" outfit to use, is the outfit "you" like fishing with  best

i'm sure there is a huge variation of what people consider and don't consider "fly fishing"

If you look up the definition of "fly fishing" in any major dictionary, you will find that it always involves using an artificial fly as a lure or bait.  Some definitions say that it also involves casting with a fly rod and line and others don't mention the equipment used to cast at all.

So basically when I'm using minnows on my fly rod, I'm not technically fly fishing.  But ya know what, who cares?  Certainly not me, when I'm hooking up steel at 2-3x's the rate of the guy next to me who is usually using a piece of yarn under a huge float.  Just Sayin!

+1

I like using my fly rod more simply because I enjoy transferring energy from my body into the fly line to cast and then manually stripping the line in by hand.  It makes you feel like your body is a bigger part of the fishing process than with spinning.

I also like it more for the reason that I bought my first fly rod, access to fly fishing only trout water!  Usually the best waters in the state for year round trout fishing.  Personally I think we need more all tackle catch and release sections like the benner springs hatchery area on spring creek though.  The use of natural bait has obviously not hurt the number of fish in the spring creek all tackle catch and release section.
