100% fly tackle for steel and trout. 90% fly for smallmouth but do enjoy minows in the fall on my 9' noodle.

I do spin fish, but only when fishing is the least important thing going on. Hanging out with some friends on a riverbank with beers and hot dogs for a night of fishing? Sure, I'll throw a nightcrawler out and forget about it all night. Making a Saturday float down a river with an old friend? Sure, I'll pack a med. spinning rod. If I am going for the fishing as opposed to the other stuff though, fly rod every time.

I been a spin gear guy but last year I decided to give a fly rod a try. I have a lot of work to do. I still use spin gear 95% of the time.

I had to go back and re-think my answer after reading colds. I would have to say my fishing selection is pretty much challenge and species specific. I have "stepped up" and caught some difficult species on a fly. Bone, redfish, tarpon (small), bass, small shark, pike. But 85% of the time I'm using spinning or even big level wind reels for those fish. So for a challenge I fly fish. For fun I spin fish. And for food, I just stand at the top of a waterfall and grab them as they jump past.

I like to fish with a wide variety of gear.  I usually fish for steelies with a fly rod, but will use a noodle rod when I fish with a buddy who only uses spinning gear and bait.  I have fished for steelies with a centerpin.  It is a wonderful way to fish, but nearly impossible in Erie where a long drift is hard to find.  Late season when the crowds slow down some is the best time I have found to break out the centerpin.  Of course, when it gets too cold, there are issues like the line freezing to the reel, the eyes icing, etc...

In the summer I like to fish for cat fish and that usually brings out the baitcasters and bait.  Sometimes I will take along a spinning rod and reel as well.

Muskies are another favorite and there it is the baitcasters, heavy rods and big lures.

When I got to the ocean, it is spinning gear and baitcasters.  In fact, I am hoping to get a pretty heavy surf casting set up next time I am at the Outer Banks.  There were some very nice red drum around, the 40 plus lb size and my biggest gear was not really up to the task.  Also, I did not have the casting distance I needed to chuck a big chunk of bait the 100 plus yards to get over the sandbar.  In that case, bigger is better.

All in all, I pretty much match my gear to what I am fishing for, the type of fishing and the conditions.  I am not a purest when it comes to fishing.  In fact, I get rather bored sometimes with one method and just like to change things up to make it more interesting.  Besides if you use different types of fishing gear you get to buy more toys....

i consider myself as fisherman that uses a flyrod when i want.  i also use spinning and casting gear and if you want to add another catagory trolling gear.  if i iced fished id use that also.  the type of gear used is not important, it's just a means to an end - having fun.

Don't own a fly rod. A buddy of mine told me a joke the other day.. You know why there are so many guys with fly rods in the tribs? Because it would be a parole violation to posses a gun for them yo go hunting.. Or something like that.

ive been a spinster all my life, and i really enjoy it.my work schedule doesnt permit me much time to practice with a fly rod and reel.my nephew peaked my interest a bit this year when he called me and said he had just bought a fly rod and asked if i knew of somewhere "secluded" where we could fish and maybe catch a trout.so off we go up on the redbank.him with a flyrod and me with my spin tackle.we fished maybe an hour and i had to stop and sit down i was laughing so hard.im not sure what fly he was using because all that was left after he made a few casts was the hook.i told him he needed a bit of work and we both had a good laugh.im not the one to be teaching fly fishing but there has to be a way of not snapping the fly at the back end of a cast.i tried to show him the roll cast like i had seen guys do it on the streams but maybe i wasnt explaining it well enough because he still snapped the fly too hard in the back.so i think im gonna take up the fly pole so i can teach my nephew how to use itany suggestions on a good settup for a beginner? btw i shoot a 308

On a bad day?  A full day, right?

+/- 47 steelbows.  A full day for me includes no less than two dumps at the Elk Creek Access "toilets", and a 3 hour liquid "lunch" at the Avonia tavern.

I own a fly rod (7' 4wt I think)..... I haven't used it in 5 years.  Spinning, casting and a pin (which hasn't seen water in a few years either) are what I use.

i like to use a 7wt fly rod, but on these tribs im not sure if its truly fly fishing from a purist viewpoint...using split shot and dead drifting an egg or nymph pattern after an 8-10ft roll cast is about as close as i get...no false casting...no dry flies. Anyone ever get a steelie to take a surface dry?

I don't know anyone that spin fishes because it's a "challenge"

I could show you lots of challenges with a spin rod. For instance, someone else on this thread asked if they ever had a steelie take a surface fly.

Yes, I have. Many. I've also had them take a surface fly, fished on a spin rod, without the use of any float or bobber.   Not even going to try and explain it on here.  I'd be glad to demonstrate sometime and then you can let me know if you find it a "challenge" or not.

Not really. Doing it consistently would be a challenge. But catching 1 wouldn't be all that tough.

I also did it backwards... Fished the Erie tribs with a flyrod for a few years, then slowly went back to spin gear. Drifting yarn and nymphs under a float does absolutely nothing for me. It CAN be fun to strip streamers in the lake front/lower streams, but thats it for me.

Now if I was a little closer to a bigger river I'm sure I'd get into the whole spey thing... But I'd most likely just swing a jig or a flatfish lure. I also have no probably drifting a bag of eggs...
