Weather, Type of fish, Bait/Lure/Rig used, Size and weight of fish, Location, Depth, Features of note (only when I first fish an area), Time of capture...

The day I make a fishing spreadsheet....I quit.
I don't always snag fish, but when I do... I choose Little Cleos I'm the best looking smartest snagging poacher alive...

That sounds like work to me! I do keep a hunting and fishing journal. I just use a pocket calender(from work). I write down date,what I saw or caught,spot or depth and size if it was big. It at least shows patterns some good some bad.

A couple of years ago I made up some real nice pads, even got leather folios. They have a place for date, time, temp, location, speed, lure, dipsy settings, pretty much all the info you would need to repeat the process. Funny thing is I never think about filling them out till it's too late. I've had them on the boat for 3 years and haven't even touched them with a pen.  Guess that shows a pattern of getting excited when I'm catching fish.

I just remember the day, the fish, and what it was caught on. I have found that if I write it down the growth of the fish is hindered. So in the interest of conservation I merely keep the fish in unwritten memory where it can grow unhindered. I can still check the length of the fish by bringing it up again in a story. For example, when I was 17 I caught an 8 inch brown trout in elk creek on a white rooster tail. Just an hour later it was a 12 inch brown. Within days it was 14 inches, caught on a home tied fly. Today, that was a 30 inch brown, big hooked jaw that exploded on an irresistible at the back edge of an eddy. Since I was only using a 3 weight I had to.... So you see, I find that an actual record of the fish hinders its ability to become a record fish. Think conservation, don't write it down.

I agree with cbeagler; logs would only hinder the growth potential of a lot of my fish. Takes years to be experianced enough to properly calculate growth potential...WF

Hey, if you want to do that, MM gave a good idea of what to put down. I just had a young man ask me this evening if I had ever caught a Musky. Now in 40 years of fishing, I know that I have. But for the life of me I cannot remember any of the details. Northern? Oh yes. Pickerel? The things were as prolific as rabbits in upstate New York. Bowfin? you bet. But maybe a log would have been a good idea. As it was I had to pull it up out of memory and seeing how it was 30 years ago--it was a HUGE musky. It did quite well over the years.

I have a running log that dates back to 1987. First couple years were in a notebook, now I use a log book I get from the B.A.S.S organization..Nice log book....Sure makes some patterns easier to see.....

I use a composition book to record my trout/salmon catches for each year. Not too detailed, just date, time, location, weather/water conditions, fishing method and catch info by species. This way I can keep track of my catches and try trend any patterns. But with 80% of my catches being stockies, you really don't need too. I just like to do it, I started it in 2001.

Every sunday afternoon I see how much dried up blood is on the boat and how long it takes to clean off thats my first indication, then I look in the freezers and make sure a few are full of feesh. If that all works I'm in good shape the only logs I see on the weekend are the ones that go on the fire.

Good morning, I am new to this forum. I am a student of data science and fishing. I have been wanting to practice my data science with some information on fishing. I want to use data science to help me find patterns to increase my catches. I am new to crappie fishing and have not been collecting data at this point.
