Smallmouth fishing

I was reading several of the fishing reports about the poor smallmouth fishing.I just wanted to add that when we were here last year in late June there were dead smallies everywhere on the main lake.I was wondering if anyone knows what causes this and if this is common.I'm not talking a couple of fish we seen hundreds washed up on the banks also.
