Crooked Creek

I'm seeing on the corp of eng. site that Crooked Creek's level is 842.  Normal summer pool is 846.  Has anyone been there recently?  I was planning on going there this evening but if it's 4ft low it might be tough getting a boat in.

I was there on Saturday April 10 and again last night on April 14th, water is low, however I didn't have any issues with launching my sixteen foot bass boat.

I have not had any success catching fish where they "should be" in 65 degee water.  I can't buy a bite in the shallow wood.  Has anybody had any luck in spawning areas?

not 100% sure myself.  and someone with more knowledge please correct me.
i'm guessing the difference between current level of 842 and the summer pool of 846 does mean a difference of 4 feet.  perhaps metric for centimeters??

I was there on 4/3/10 and only got a few small crappies. I'm guessing these fish are a little messed up with the water level moving all over the place.  When I was there at the beginning of April the water level fell quite a bit (15ft).  This was after the rain and snow melt.  The lake was full and then once the river lowered they let all the water in Crooked Creek out.  The water level moving this much can't help the bite that's for sure.

Here is the site I'm using.  http://wmw.lrp.usace.army.mil/current/forecast.html

I have no idea why they would let the water level drop 4 ft below summer pool this time of year.
Does anyone else know why they would do this?

The outflow is measured in cubic feet per minute, so I just always figured the elevation was measured in feet. Regardless of what units it is measured in, it is 4 units low.  Until the water quits fluctuating I feel the bite is going to be off.  JMO

gotchya.  if the 4 units are decimeters it wont matter.
if its 4 miles, it will matter.

we need to figure out the dam dam# units of measurement!

If min. flow is low on the Allegheny, they'll let water out of connecting tribs resevoirs to help maintain flow in the river for navigation purposes.  We are an 1" or more below normal rainfall for April so far.  Allegheny flow is below normal for this time of year too, I think.

Could be something else too like an upcoming inspection or repairs but that stuff is usually announced.

ok... gotcha.. but where on there does it say what the normal summer pool is? All it says for Crooked is the min pool and current pool. Where did this 846 number come from?

    Found this, seems helpful...

    http://www.lrp.usace.army.mil/rec/lakes/crookedc.htm

It's in feet above sea level, as mentioned by pxa.

Streambed @ dam is 803' (above sea level)
Normal pool 845' (above sea level)
    Max 920' (above sea level)

Giving a total maximum depth of 117' above stream bed.
So, yeah, it looks like it's around 2.47' below summer pool...
if I'm looking at the #'s right.

    (845' normal pool - 842.53' current pool)

Good part about those sites is that since some of those dams control water from different watersheds, heavy rain in one area doesn't neccessarily affect another area. So by checking the 3 day forecast you can get a good idea what the water will be like. It is a good idea to make a mental note of conditions & compare it to what the water level is marked at. I have found that the people at the 3 dams in our area(Loylhanna,Conemaugh,& Crooked Creek) are friendly & helpful .  btw I was at C. C. this afternoon, from shore. The water is pretty clear & I saw some shad swimming by. Got a few fish ,but  nothing to get exited about. If you go in a boat now you can mark more cover than normal.  sam

Crooked Cr. MINIMUM POOL 837.4 MAX POOL 917.4 ACTUAL POOL 842.53

The numbers are feet in elevation. So the lake is 5 feet above minimum pool, so launching a pontoon should be no problem.

I was there yesterday also caught a few small crappies, couple of bass, and a carp. The crappie are as active as I thought they'd be.

The spillway is lousy with snakes. They're everywhere in those rocks. One of the reasons why ive always loved that place.
