Caddis Pupa Wing Buds
Had a question on what to use for the wing buds on a caddis pupa. Instead of trying to explain it - thought I'd do a tute on it. Just another way of doing it - colors and materials - substitute with whatever ya think will work...Hope this helps ya....
Materials:
1. Start the thread just behind the eye and wrap towards the bend. When you get to the start of the bend - I like to reposition the hook to make it easier to wrap and tie in the materials.
2. Tie in the clear lace material (here I used liquid lace filled with baby oil but you could use d-rib or equivalent).
Then tie in the silver tinsel and one strand of green floss. Leave enough of the lace material to reach beyond the eye.
You can use whatever color floss, tinsel is for a bit of flash. What ever you use - it will show through the clear lace material.
3. Wrap over top of the lace material to the point shown. By doing this there is no "bump" at the rear of the hook. Wrap forward the floss and tinsel and tie off.
4. Wrap forward the lace material and tie off.
You can leave this as is - or cover with epoxy. I used Clear Cure Goo epoxy on this.
5. Tie in the leg material - here I used material from a gadwall feather.
6. To make the wing buds--- Take a single feather from a hen saddle patch. With your thumb and forefinger - stroke back evenly the fibers from the feather. Coat one side with Hard as Hull cement or equivalent and then continue stroking the cement into the feather with your fingers - holding the tip with your right hand and pulling back while pinching the feather with your left. Let dry (a minute or two) then trim off the tip.
7. Tie these in on each side of the hook.
Trim off the excess. Tie in a set of eyes if you want - not necessary though. 4X tippet is what I used here - melted on the ends.
8. Dub the head with just enough dubbing to "color" and cover the thread.
9. Tie in the antenna ( I used two strands of gadwall)
Tip - to curl the antenna to the rear so it's not sticking straight up - take your scissors and lightly slide the edge of your scissors along the first part of the antenna. Kind of like you do to make ribbon curl when you wrap presents.
Whip Finish off.
And here's the mature adult - wings tied with the same hen feather - glued to tea bag paper and burnt with wing burners.

Very nice...I do mine the same way, nearly. Except I use the tip of a partridge feather, Flex-Seal'ed, for the wing, and larva lace.

hey folks just a tip. go to micheals and get the 5mm stretch lace is over with the
bead stuff.all you have to do is wrap a under body for color and wrap this stuff
over it. No need to buy all differant colors of tubing.it is really stretchy too. ff46
