KNOTS IN LINE

started  11 yr old grandson last june with 5 wt, just roll casting and drifting for trout with nymphs and wets and he did well. today was his first time for steel with an 8/9 wt 9 ft. rod and I noticed small knots in his leader and once in the fly line itself when I was changing his flies.  He seemed to need more muscle than finesse with this new rod and I was wondering if anyone knows what he could be doing wrong in his cast to get knots forming? thanks

Well it has been my experience that sometimes a newer fly caster can cast through his line and actually tie a granny knot in the air.  Have him bring the fly line back over his shoulder and foreward over his head.  Basically if you are standing behind him have him bring the line back at 1 or 2 o'clock and forward at 12  This keeps the line from hitting itself.  Also when he picks the line up of the water have him do it so that the fly drags a bit on the back cast.   Slow the whole motion down.  He may be jerking the line insted of pulling it.   Watch him for technique because anybody will have more trouble with an 8 wt as opposed to a 5 wt.  Same with the  roll cast in at three (low) out at 2 (high) this makes the line follow an oval track in the air.

I was doin' the same thing...tyin knots in the line. The above advice is exactly what I did to straighten things out.
