Catching something on anything you create yourself is awesome. I tie flies, but they are crappy (no pun intended). I usually leave some sort of trademark on my flies, or can just distinguish between mine and professionally tied flies, and I can distinctly remember the first tiny trout I caught on one I tied myself. I reveled in the fact that the chase had actually started months before I caught that fish; it added a whole new level to the game.
Add level 3 & 4, which to me are using materials you have collected yourself (i.e. catching fish on deer hair caddis tied from my pop's deer hides from the early '70s) and creating your own pattern that actually works (I've never done this), and that is the pinnacle.
Regardless of species, that's the best! Happy tying Jigs!
