Opening Day
Hey whre's everyone going for opening day? I think we are hitting up Loyalhanna like usual since they are still letting you camp there. Scouted some new areas last weekend at 4-mile, Indian Creek, Laurel Run, Brush Run, and Wills Creek. Found some dandy places to try. Have fun and let me know if any of you fish Brush Run out past Somerset.

For the past 14 years my son and I have fished Loyalhanna opening day. Last year he was living in North Carolina and I went there(NC) to fish opening day and he came back to PA to fish PA opening day. He is now 27 and I recall the first few years I would take several of his school friends with me and enjoy the day with a group of youngsters. It has been our tradition to fish until about 2PM, come home and clean our fish and eat them for dinner that night. The rest of the season is C&L except for those injured. My son has moved back to PA and the tradition will be continued. We go early, take some food, coffee or soup in a thermus and fish the exact same spot.

Opening day i will be far away form the water. There's too many people, and most don't know how to properly take care of the fish. If i had to go somewhere, Id go to a nice mountain stream in NW Pa.

Headed to Laurel Hill, been going there since i was 5. My dad or grandpap would carry me and my brother across the creek to an island, we'd fish this same hole every year. I am now 42 and the three of them have been gone for years, but i still go to the same hole every year. Just enjoy spending the morning on that creek, with the memories of the 4 of us together having a blast. I guess you could say its my "rivers run through it" creek.

Well even though its an old thread, ill comment. I still haven't decided yet. Thought of trying Brush Creek in Somerset again. I fished it years ago and really enjoyed it. The crowds do get a little old but, after the first week, it seems ot settle down.

My feelings haven't changed since i said it in 2007....I won't be near the water on opening day. I get too annoyed with the crowds and slobs. But for those who have made it a tradition, I respect that and hope yinz have some good times and fishing!

This year marks a return to tradition for me. When I was a kid (say, 12 through 15 or 16), every year I'd fish Laurel Hill with my bet friend, his dad, and my dad. As per usual, there was always a group of people at the best runs, but it was more about the experience. We'd all get there together, then split up with plans to meet back at the trucks for lunch, to eat and share the story of our morning...usually I had to dump out my hip boots too. Since then, there have been girlfriends, school, jobs, health issues, and more that meant that none of us have done that trip since then. This year, my friend and I will be going, possibly with one or both of our dads. He spent two years teaching out of state and it is his first time getting a license after moving back. Also since those days, he's now a married man...lots has changed, but we've stayed close friends, and it's going to be a great day no matter what the fishing is like. :)

Fisher, I don't blame you actually thought of skipping the opening day madness but, it has been kind of a tradition with my brother and I. Still not sure of where we will go.

Glad to see that opening day to a lot of people is more about tradition and family than anything. Thats what its always been to myself, my dad, and my brother. We'll be hitting laurel hill creek as usual that morning.
