Allegheny River by Emlenton and Foxburgh

My family and I will be taking a little get-away to a cabin along the Allegheny river.

I'm curious if any one has fished it, if you can eat what you catch, what is abundant up and around there?

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Floated down that section a few times this summer and many times in the past.  The most productive fishing (from a canoe) is for smallies...top water action in early morning and late evening can be pretty good, while shallow running rapalas and twister tails produce during the day.   I have caught walleye, but not in any significant numbers.  There are catfish, suckers, pike, musky, carp and I'm sure a few other species that are in there, but I have only targeted smallies and walleye.  I have never eaten anything from there, but I don't think it would be hazardous to do it.  Most of the camps along the river have outdated/no sewage filtration systems, so that would be the major contributor to pollution i think.

I just got back from a float.
I see no problem with eating fish from there. It's a really nice river!

A little south of Mill Creek there is a nice pool that I have pulled a few walleye from, same around the mouth of the Clarion.  I'm sure there are some money spots that people who fish it regularly know about, but those are the only places that I have caught more than one walleye at on the same drift.  Other than that, the walleye i have caught have been pretty spread out.

thanks mike and BW. I plan on eating the fish.

Nothing special, just a few days away with my dogs, and 3 sisters . And my folks of course.

By the way, hows the panfish deal up there? Like I said, I've got 3 sisters, and they'll be looking to have some fun to, so I'd like get them on some fish they won't have to work for.

    Good luck!

I think your ratio of rods to cases & bottles may be slightly off.....

Probably saw this too late. The river is up 4 feet (at least) and the color of coffee with alot of cream.

    Ok, it's BLOWN OUT.

I'd think about another weekend or hit a feeder stream/creek and that's no guarantee, some of them are high and muddy also.

Well, went up to find chocolate milk.

So I drank. A lot. And frequently. I forgot my digital camera's memory card, so I took no pictures myself, my sister took some though. I'll get em up when I can.

To be updated soon, I'm just too **** tired to post.

Well, I figure I'll tell ya all the story.
Like I said, pics are limited, because I forgot my memory card

We arrived wednesday evening, to find the river a bloody mess. Looked like Choco Milk. With Logs in it. So I drank and laughed with my dogs for the night.

Wednesday night brought dreams of fish, so I had to do something. Waking up the river still looked awful, but better than it was the day before. So whats a guy to do when you have 6 children, ranging in ages from 15-55, want to catch fish and are all looking at you? Drive away, drive somewhere. I bought a map at the Truck stop and gave it the look over.
Kahle Lake looked like an alright place. So began the journey to find it.
Finding a Trader Horn along the way, that had some nightcrawlers thank god. We arrived at Kahle Lake at dusk, just in time for my Brother in law to catch a Large Mouth, so he'd finally keep his large mouth shut.

That night, a billion Mosquitoes came out to play at the lake, and so did a million Bats. Gave me a good laugh hearing my sisters scream.

On the way home, I grabbed some Chikin Livah just in case. Arriving at the cabin, I saw the river was still crap so we ate some grub, and my oldest sister who is in her very, very, very late 20's , decided to go fishing dahn the river for cats. It was 1 Am. I figured it couldn't hurt. So down we went. First cast, not in the water more than a minute, I caught a 6lb channel. Thank god. The trip was saved.
2 Mintues later, my sister catches a big flathead. Was around 30 inches, and I'd say 12lbs. Nice. The trip was saved I thought.

In the midst of the commotion, my Brother in law, 2 other sisters, and dad come down. "Johnny, Johnny, we want to catch them, Tie us up!" So begins the 30 minute tying fest for me. And sure as sh*t, as each rod is rigged up and casted, another is snagged and lost. Goodbye Gamakatsu Lazer Octopus Circle hooks at 6 Bucks a pack of 8. The night was good though, for the next hour we caught 8 fish ranging from 23-32 inches, all heavy.

My youngest sister caught 2 that night, but she didn't come down untill we were almost done, and the bite had slowed. She was the only one who brought her camera down.

The next day came about, and we (I) made the decision to go back to Kahle Lake. I had brought my 4 wt, and wanted to whip it around. We arrived at 5 pm, and immediately began to catch some LM's.

This is one of my sisters with the monster of the day.

Here I am with a bruiser. I like that hat. So shut up.

If you read my other posts, you'll know I have a knack for nailing big fish on the fly.

That night we went down, to the river again, and only managed one catfish. Go figure.

I'll leave ya with some other pics from the trip. We had a blast, I liked Keystone Lights.

    Me with another bruiser.

almost forgot, these mother f'ers were the stairs to the river. 73 of them. 73. 73. Every time.

these folks had the right idea.

    The cutest river monster ever.

    The scariest!

    Showdown!
