Beaver Run

We have a great opportunity to fish new waters that have never been available to the public since its conception in 1952. I am speaking of Beaver Run Reservoir which lies just north of Greensburg. The potential for game fish such as smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye is excellent. This lake also dwarfs any other in the county at 1,300 acres and 25 miles of shoreline.
With the support of the local State Rep, sportsmen’s clubs, and businesses, the Pa Fish and Boat Commission have submitted a proposal to the Westmoreland County Municipal Authority to permit public fishing at the reservoir.
The WCMA board members, who are appointed by the County Commissioners, will vote on the proposal and have the final say.
If you would like to have access to this lake I ask that you show your support by contacting the County Commissioners office. Please bring this to the immediate attention of others at your work, church, clubs, or other organizations who may be interested. Things are moving fast and we must make our voice heard. Thank You, Mike

If you'd like to write the address is:

I was reading sevaral different posts about how the rivers are a mess, the gates are locked at loyalhanna...and was thinking...would be nice to fish The Beave for some of those ice out pike.

Don't forget about this gem of a lake and opportunity...call the county commisiioners if you haven't already to show your support.

Does anybody know if there is something that the sportsmen could do to watch over the lake?  I think if we had an organized group of people willing to make a commitment to watch out for littering and policing the Beav, then we could make this point to the water authority and the commissioners.  Kind of like a "neighborhood watch".  I'm not saying run people down, just stop in and pick up litter on a regular basis, get a billboard made with a name on it saying what we do.  I'd be willing to help.  By the way, I talked to my rep the other day.  They need more phone calls.   I think the sportsmen are turning the tables!   H2O Wolf, I'd love to catch a nice pike.  When we get this opened, maybe you can land it for me.

Eyefish..who's your state rep, what district?  I thoughthe rep in that area was on board.  I think we just need to keep trying.

Sam, any suggestions as to what we can do that you guys are going to cover at the meeting?

BTW...I have a large net, gloves, and all the tools needed to land and release that big pike.

CPR (catch, photo, release)...leave the fishing the same as when you started!

We can use ideas & help.We also are trying to get as many pettitions as possible.Time is of the essence     sam

H20Wolf, my reps are onboard, don't get me wrong.  The only thing they said is that they need more phone calls so they can justify to the commissioners, MAWC, and others that they are serving the interests of their constituents.

if i may make a suggeston?

since we are all out there fishing or at least most of us fairly regularly why dont we all print up some basic flyers with "Help open beaver run to the public" real big. then what they have to do like call thier local rep and give the phone numbers and hand them out to people we see when we are out and about. im deffinatly willing to do it. printer ink and a spool of paper are cheap in comparison to what it might accomplish. there are way more fishermen out there then what frequent these boards and lots of people have no idea whats even going on right now. even if ten of us do it and we each get 20 people to call one week thats 200 people more then before.

besides a flyer is a sure fire way to meet people and talk about it. once that happens im sure you'll find way more people in support of it then not. and who knows maybe even a couple cool people you'll endup being friends with god forbid.

    Great Idea Rick!

If someone would let me know what they want printed on it, I can get the printing at no cost. And then distribute them.

Finally it looks like this thing might take off, thanks to all who are interested.

The flyer is a great idea.  It can have a picture and general info on the lake (lake size, location, species of fish, and of course the fact that for the past 50+ years only those with special privledges have access).

My question at this point is who is the best to contact about this...the commissioners, the state reps, or the wcma...perhaps all of the above.

It would be easy if something wes already printed on the flyer that said I support the proposal blah blah blah, and they can sign their name and send it in.  Should also include all the cotacts...address and phone numbers.
Just some thoughts...I'll help in any way possible.

petitions are kinda hard to recognize because people can provide false names info etc.. this is why we are still a 2 party country because when people get written in they are usually investigated and the recipient of harsh accusations.

see it would have been really great to make some flyers before trout season closed. now its gonna be 14 days or so untill the vast majority of fishermen come back outside to play. im gonna work on something and i suggest anyone else who is good with layout design work on something as well. truthfully i dont care if we all work on our own flyers and hand out our own individual flyers, whatever works at this point.

as far as any bashing of the municipal authority or anything like that i would advise NOT doing it. more and likely your going to hand out a flyer to someone who knows one of these people and if it gets back to them it might just **** them off enough to say "screw you" regardless. im gonna layout something basic, not to much info because it will loose the readers interest. i'll post what i come up with in this thread when i get it laid out.

I grew up getting chased by old man Baker and his gang when I fished Beaver Run in my younger days. That was over 20 years ago since the last time I was there. The fishing out there used to be fantastic. Largemouth, Northern, Crappie.

I love to fish. I like this idea. I'm going to do as you requested Mike and contact some of those organizations you mentioned. I will also pass the word along.

i was attempting to start one last night but unfortunatly my pirated copy of photoshop **** the bed on me. im supposed to get a functioning copy of photoshop from my buddy tomorrow.

btw what kinda time frame are we looking at for this decision? i will honestly consider not fishing opening weekend (it maybe a godsend actually) and going around to twin lakes, northmoreland, mammoth etc and handing the things out.

here is what ive come up with so far. i had to search around for some heart wrenching photos and think of a nice sob story. its not done yet though. i have to go back and edit the text a litle for some punctuation issues (me no speaka da engrish) and add in contact info in the lower right hand corner. it would look a hell of a lot better but im useing a feeware image editor called GIMP which is similar to photoshop but has less enviromet control. all that aside i wanted to keep it basic anyway.

this is a big file, 147k so it might take a minute to load if your on dialup. i made it 8.25x10.75 so it will fit a little loose on a standard 8.5x11 sheet of paper when you center it on the printers preferences option. hopefully the site i uploaded it to wont take it down. they shouldnt since im a moderator but if they do let me know and i'll find another place to host it.

btw if you have automatic image resizing enabled on internet explorer its going to show up small and unreadable. either disable the feature or download the picture and open it in paint or fax viewer

This is a great start.  Nice draft Rick.  Trout season can actually work in our favor.  We can get the word out at the bait shops and small sporting goods shops all over.  Like you said, even if we get out and talk to anglers on the lakes on opening day....that's where most families fish.  Hats off to those stores who want to perpetuate our cause.  They even had a petition at a game feed at Keystone Rod and Gun Club this past weekend.

Great job Rick...One minor suggestion.  The font size is kinda small and some folks may have a hard time reading it.  The pics and the info are wonderful.
I tried to get some info from the F&BC as to when another meeting will be held with the wcma but I have not gotten a response.  I think we just need to treat this as urgent and as already suggested use trout season to our advantage.  I'll cover all the bait shops that I know in the Mon Valley.

Just a reminder that the Westm'd Co. Sportsmans League will be discussing this issue at it's meeting tomorrow eve. 7pm at the westm'd Co. court house.WCO Evancho will be there &may be able to answer your Questions. If you are handing out petitions please advise people not to sign thier name on more than 1 petition because that could do us more harm than good. The first thing that I tell people when asking them to sign is that the PFC will be enforcing litter laws, and also stress that the water is purified before being sent on its way to consumers. these are the 2 biggest concerns.also I stress that this is not private property since we the consumers have paid for it. Also that drinking resevoirs are open all over the U.S. for fishing. any ? you may contact me at: suesam6276@peoplepc.com   sam

ok im gonna kill the whole layout and come up with something new. actually its a pretty lame layout and now that its not 2:30 in the morning and i have my wits about myself im gonna do something different. i have all day to work on this so im gonna head out to beaver run in about 30 minutes and take some pictures (from the current legal areas). my goal is to provide a structured layout with larger fonts for easier reading as well as a little more information. if someone could get as much contact info as they can for me it would be great. ex.. local, county, state reps names and numbers or any number thats applicable.

btw please excuse the lake of professionalism with my layouts, im an electrician, not a graphic designer. it just so happens my buddy is for a living and i have a slight understanding of how to do this stuff. hopefully i should be able to come up with something half way decent for the meeting. it would be great to hand out some proofs there and get some of those guys to distribute these things also.

also addressing places to hand them out... trout opener would be great because it gives you one on one time with people and you might be able to answer questions they have but the bait shop idea is a great one. im sure the local gander mountains, dicks and sportsmens warehouse would also let us leave some there. also dont forget about the notice boards at the local lakes. i know most people dont read them but for some reason when i walk by one of those boards i always look at what they have posted on them. might also want to try the boathouses at twin lakes, northmoreland, and north park. hell even the fishing sections at kmart and wal mart.

ok new flyer layout. here it goes.
    http://www.superhonda.com/photopost/data/2/beaverflyer.jpg

the following is a letter i drafted that i will be sending all of the local and state reps with the aforementioned flyer.

To: Pennsylvania State Senetor Sean Logan, Pennsylvania State Reperesentative Joeseph A. Petrarca, Pennsylvania State Reperesentative Thomas A. Tangretti, and all Westmoreland Couny Commissioners

The Following Document you are about to recieve is a flyer that will begin its distribution
throughout wesern Pennsylvania by hundreds of sportsmen in a grass roots campaign to open
the Beaver Run Resovoir to public fishing. This body of water as you allready know is an immense compound that has been to date untapped for any of its resources other then water supply. The ability for this area to provide a means of recreation and activity for residents in your districts as well as people throughout pennsylvania is astounding.
We commonly think of our elected officials as those who would make laws to restrict our freedoms or infringe on our personal liberties for the comfort of safety and security. But there are many of us who realize that our representation while providing us with that safety and security are also obligated by civil duty to enhance and elevate our lives by any justifiable means.
Benjamin Franklin once said; " Those who give up some of their liberty in order to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty, nor safety.". So we would ask that you, our elected officials, in the coming days support our efforts as groups and individuals to establish another outlet of recreation for the betterment of the populace. We would also ask you, as our voice, to help us fight for our cause despite the fear that others may envoke.
We are all aware of the uphill battle that we face, we have assumed this burden willingly. We would only hope that you, to, will stay the course and put forth the full effort of yourselves and the offices that you serve to assist us in this matter. So as of this time please be forewarned that your names have been listed on our flyers as persons of contact and advocates of our cause. during the following weeks you may recieve phone calls, fax's, and letters from many people. We would hope they are not dismissed but are taken as proof thereof our ambition to see this through to no end.

    Thank you for your time

btw i checked kinkos to see how much it would be to run off about 1000 copies and it was like 138$. so i'll be printing these things out on my home printer untill the ink runs dry. unfortunatly ive been out of work for a little while and the money is running dry so its the best im gonna be able to do for now. if anyone has any hookups with copying machines or a print shop now would be the time to come forward. to bad i wasnt in school still, the computer lab would be getting molested. oh welp, anyway if anyone else is going to hand these things out just save that image and use windows print and fax viewer to print them, if you try to print them from internet explorer they wont print full page.

also if anyone has any constructive criticism i'd be more then happy to change something or add some or delete something. like i said before im no graphic artist but im givin it a shot.

hate to be annoying about all this but i just thought about something. some of the most dedicated fishermen i know always help out with the slimer stockings. here is a list of the upcoming slimer stockings for westmoreland county. maybe someone lives close to one of these places and would mind dropping some of our propaganda off when people are there helping the stockings. i'll head down to turtle creek since i live close by, been wondering if my waders are dry rotted or not, guess floating some slimers downstream is as good a chance as any to see if they are.
