Allegheny River - Tionesta

We will be in the tionesta area this weekend and will be canoeing the Allegheny River.   I'm not familiar with the area and would appreciate a little help.  We usually fish the Yough river for trout and smallmouth.

From what I have read on this board, fishing conditions are not the best right now.  Any suggestions on what to fish for, bait, lures etc would be appreciated. Also if you can recommend any other spots around Tionesta itwould be great.

Thanks a lot.

River was low and clear last weekend.  It rained Tuesday pretty good and got the tribs up and muddy.  Should be a bit better this weekend.  Where are you putting in at?  What are you targeting?  I do good on Rappelas.  Silver and black and gold do good for me.  Also crayfish and crayfish lures.  since you fish the yough bring those huss's up. Let me know where you are putting in at and I will tell some spots.

Fishing is quite tough in August. Fish in current if you can. Try across from
the Tionesta hatchery, and down stream from there. Yo-Zuri's tore them
up in late June and July. But now it's poke and hope.

We plan on putting in about 10 miles north of Tionesta and floating down.  Would love to catch some walleye but realistically targeting smallmouth.

We've had massive storms and a lot of rain the past two days in Pittsburgh.  What about up north?

It sounds like the tionesta outflow is good for muskie - not trout?

How's the fishing on the lake?  When's a good time of year to go after the walleye?  I'd imagine the spring, before and after spawn is always good.  Any action during the summer, or does it slow down until fall?  Erie seems to be the only place that fishing heats up when the temp is above 90 degrees!

BlackandGold, I'd think you would be better off drifting from Kinzua Dam to the bridge in Warren.  My last trip up in July I drifted that stretch and caught a few nice bass and trout after trout all the way down.  Between my uncle, father, and I we landed about 50 trout biggest beinga 23 inch brown.

Passed over the Allegheny Springdale area 2-3 times today, chocalate brown, high. Talked to a buddy up in Oil City same way and a tad high.
I fish from West Hickory to Kibbe's every weekend at one spot or another, 50% of the time wading.
Been doing the best between Tionesta and Kibbe's, Rebel crayfish for smallies, Texas red, silver rapala for the northerns, managed 4 the last 2 weekends, water was extremly low unitl a few days ago.
Lake may be your best bet, Kinzua or Tionesta, good luck and ley us know how you did.

Well we're back!  We floated from the county line down to Tionesta.  The river in this section appeared to be a little low and slightly murky.  Not muddy at all. Only had to get out of the canoe twice and walk it a few steps.  This was probably more because we don't know the river than the actual water level.

Fishing was ok.  Caught some nice smallies and lost a walleye! Lots of luck using Mepps spinners.  Nightcrawlers worked just as well.  No luck with rappelas.  All in all a good trip.

Was up at Kibbe's since Tuesday night, went to the Indian festival, had great hot sausage Thursday & Friday along with taking the grandkids to the carnival. Game Commision had a little trailer, real freindly fellow. Methodist church ladies were the chefs of the hot sausage, they cooked 250lbs for the 3 days!
Hit Buzzard swamp Wednesday morning, caught about 10 bluegill, maybe a dozen largemouth, so cool back there and not another soul in site. Used small rapala about 1 1/2" silver/black.
We launched at Kibbe's on Thursday morning, went up past the golf course drifted back down. Caught 7 smallmouth all on riffle runners, biggest about 16".
Does anyone know the real name of the " riffle runners", dace, darter cannot find them in Fish of Pa that the commission puts out? Ed my fisherfriend had them when I got there, nice size from 3"- 5", smallmouth slammed them, wouldn't touch any lures.
Fished early morning Thursday & Friday off shore on the island, couple small ones that was it. Soon the topwater smallmouth bite will be on!

Andy how did you do, I'm sure I'll run into some day. I drive the bronze Explorer, little ducks unlimited decal on back window.

Just got back from Tionesta.  I caught about 20 smallmouth in the 3 days I fished.  The biggest on 18, but most ranged from 8-14. My dad caught a 28 inch musky at Tionesta Outflow and a 29 inch channel catfish down from the outflow.  JSHAFish I am sure I will see you someday.  I am in a marune GMC Sierra truck. The riffle runners are called logperch if those are the ones you are talking about look up logperch on google images and see.

Fished the river about 1.5 miles down from the Tidioute bridge in the evenings.  I caught probably 4 legal bass out of 6.  I did better on artifical than live bait I was really surprised.

I went up a few weeks ago and had a bucket full of crayfish and only had one hit. I was throwing a crayfish crankbait and picked up 8.

I've been catching a bunch of smallmouth in the Kennerdale area over the past few weeks using 4" and 6" Zoom flukes rigged with a #3 hook.  Work the baits using small jerks and pulls to make the bait walk and dive.  Last weekend we never used any other bait.  The fish might have been hitting on other baits but we never tried anything else.  I'm hoping the topwater action will be on this weekend.  I've been waiting for that to happen all summer with only limited success using jitterbugs after dark.
