Allegheny Harmarville Area
Does anyone on here fish the Allegheny in the Harmarville Area? What are some of the hot spots in this area? Also I am pretty sure there is a boat launch right in Harmarville on the other side of the tracks can someone confirm this?

I know there have been a lot of posts on this topic so ur best bet is to use the search function at the top of the screen. Yes there is a boat launch across the tracks in harmarville. after comming off rt28 to harmarville, at the main intersection facing the tracks make a right. About a hundred yards down there is a crossing on your left. The launch is back there. cant miss it. Lots of parking and plenty of room to pre load the boat before hitting the water. If heading towards the dam be carefull on the boat launch side of the island...its VERRRRYYY shallow in some spots. The sunken barge by the dam wall and the opposite side of the island are all good spots. I always caught more from shore in that area than from boat...dunno what im doing wrong haha. Hope this helps a little.

Like Snag mentioned, beware of the shallows on the launch side of the island. Your best bet is to motor downstream of the launch a few hundred yards and hook around to other side of the island just before the Oakmont bridge if you plan to fish up near the ****. You can not take anything but the smallest of crafts up to the **** on the Harmerville side of the islands. There is an opening in the islands about 300 yards up from the mouth of Deer Creek (up from the launch) that you can get to the **** from, just be very careful there are some seriously shallow spots there. The boat launch is just across the tracks, it is right across the street from the Ponderosa. This is a few hundred yards down towards Oakmont from the junction of Freeport rd and 910 on Freeport rd. The launch hasn't had working lights for a while now, so plan accordingly. As for the hotspots, you will have to put your time in like the rest of us did to find them.

Any of you guys eat the eyes and sauger from this stretch of river or do you C & R them? When I have fished from shore here I have always C & R'd everything.

I have been eating them for years from the lower parts of the river. I guess that may explain a few things... In all seriousness, I see no reason why you couldn't eat some fish here and there. The reality is that Lake Erie has just as many contaminants if not more, plus they are typically bigger fish there meaning they will have more contaminants in their bodies, and no one seems to mind eating them from there. I still mainly release all my fish but, if I get the itch to eat some eyes I won't hesitate to fry some up from the Allegheny.

ORIGINAL: Esox_Hunter Like Snag mentioned, beware of the shallows on the launch side of the island. You can not take anything but the smallest of crafts up to the **** on the Harmerville side of the islands. I have a 19' jet boat and the only thing stopping me from reaching the dam from the back channel these days is the construction crew barges blocking the river below the sunken barge. I can even run the little 8-10" riffle area between the 2 islands up by the dam!(Did it many times to not disturb the waders by the sunken barge) But you are correct for someone who runs a prop boat. 2' is "deep water" for a boat like mine. Hamarville is a great area for fishing. I have at least 20-30 good spots, above and below the Hulton Bridge. I fish this area alot this time of year. The only reason I head way up north on the Allegheny(Parker on up) after May, is way too many people/jet skis on the Lower Allegheny then. I live in this area, so I have quick access to it, but soon as the water lowers a few more feet, I head up to the Emlenton and Kennerdale areas. Hardly any boats up there, just the occational canoes, but the river is big enough to go aroung them easily most times.

ORIGINAL: Tiller Esox, Do you ever have any luck for Musky in this area? I have never personally done well in this area, but in all fairness I don't spend much time on the river for musky. I still haven't figured out why I don't fish for them more often there, I live about 5 minutes from pool 3. I guess I get too focused on the walleye. This year I am hoping to put some more time in for them on the lower Allegheny.

in the summer, we usually fish up and down the river on the harmar side. theres alotta nice spots off the shore. as for musky, we were walleye fishing in the back channel between the island and harmar and i was using a homemade lure and hooked onto a GIANT musky. musta been a good 45" long i fought em for a while but ended up loosin him about a few feet from the shore
