Allegheny River (Freeport)

Does anyone fish the Allegheny down by Freeport? I am going to take the boat down there this spring and was wondering if there are any good spots. Assuming there are Walleye and Bass down there.

If you plan on using the PFC ramp on Buffalo creek, right where it empties into the Alegheny is usualy a good spot for bass & eyes & saugers.Almost every year they catch 10# plus eyes there. Also if you go upstream to the lock,we do well there on the above & also crappie. Right where the Kissimentis enters the Alegheny is also good. All in all it is a good area to fish & the fish are not in a advisory area so it is assumed they are safe to eat. We also caught some big flatheads in that area.It does get busy in the Buffalo Creek area because of the ramp. Use caution when using the ramp because it is rather steep.  sam

Sure have. They have a nice, newer ramp at Buffalo Creek there with ample parking.

Mouth of the creek is a decent spot. The dam is just a few clicks upstream, but I've always used that particular ramp mainly to access the lower Kiski River. Less boat traffic there too than the places downstream on the Allegheny.

There are plenty of walleye and bass in all the lower pools of the Allegheny and this one is no exception!  I fish the Freeport Pool fairly regularly, and always catch fish there.  Like the other members have suggested--look to target the mouth of feeder creeks and below the dam itself.

Don't be afraid to seek out other spots too.  There are plenty of other spots on this pool which hold good numbers of fish when the fish are not up near the dam or creek mouths.  I've always done best either anchoring or drifting-both with live bait and soft plastic baits (Berkely Gulp, Swim Shads, Curly Tails).  Generally you will catch more fish but lots of little ones when fishing smaller baits.  I like to use larger profiled baits (whether artificial or real) to increase my odds of catching some nicer fish.

I've had moderate success trolling and catching eyes on this pool, although it is tough with the ever-varying bottom contours created by the dredging.  My best producers for trolling there are Rapala Shad Raps, Taildancers, and Storm Jr. Thundersticks.  I'm sure any crankbaits that mimic the natural forage will work also--presentation there being the key.

Lundman 76, Lovgren69 & the others, all have offered good advice.I fish the Freeport area all the time, but i,m a bank fisherman. As Mr.crappie stated the boat ramp offers great access to some darn good fishing & the dam is almost always a good spot ( depending on conditions). You should try fishing the evening/night bite.I been catching eyes & saugers for 3 weeks now, even with high water.I've also watched fishermen in their boats move very little once they find that spot. Most fish are sub-legal males right now (a few legal eyes have also been turned loose),I have'nt seen, heard or caught any hogs yet. The river is still a little cool but give em time the big ones will bite.I,m sure they are there & in a boat you'll have a better chance @ the hogs. This is a nice pool to fish not to busy...but planning a trip Mon-Fri is better.

NIce place to fish boat traffic will get a little heavier as you go up towards the Kiski Junction. I've done well down stream from the Route 356 bridge. Deep trough on the right side heading down stream. Good Luck!

For what's worth. Anglers fishing the Allegheny River near the mouth of Bull Creek had been catching walleyes, some reportedly as large as 12 pounds, up until a week or so ago, said Matt DeMichele of Allegheny Bait and Tackle in Tarentum. The fish had been hitting jigs and minnows.

Can anyone tell me where and when to catch crappies in the river in this area fishing from shore? I fish them in lakes, but never had luck in the river.

I don't know where to catch them on the river from the shore, but I have caught quite a few of them on the Lower Allegheny from my boat. I have ONLY ever caught them on the river in very, very slack water, deep holes. A few times between islands where the water was kinda deep and barely moving at all. If you know of any water like that, give it a try.

Between Guys Run Road and the Oakmont bridge try in that area. They used to bring barges in there for the coal mine. Advance Auto Parts is there in front of it.

they dont use that bay anymore for barges(behind autozone) It has just been filling with sed. for quite some time.. like 10 years..only bout 6-8 feet deep... but in the winter and early spring they are just loaded in their under all those trees that fall in off steep banks in the bay.. got three this winter over 14".. little boat helps this time of year.. Their is a little feeder stream that flows in the back, created a nice drop off their... Musky hole as well... warming up after a cold winter

moose22dog, I really couldn't...went out sat. night & did o.k. . No flats but landed 4 channels up to 16-18 inches. I'm surprised @ how well the river is fishing now.Been catching @ least 1 each trip.I also set a rig for eyes & saugers doing pretty well there to, they are getting bigger, 16-18 sauger the best so far.Shiners & chick livers..

when we fish the river up that way, we usually go a little farther up river to the dam at kelly's station/clinton. i havent fished it in a while now (2 years), but its usually a nice spot for walleye

Ive fished at Kelly Station at night in the past, but stay away from there now. I know several people who have ran into trouble with the campers. Not worth the hassle.

we always fished on the clinton side, where you can drive back to the dam and park and walk down.  we used to camp up there too in the summers.  we've never had any problems on that side since weve been fishin there - atleast 15 years now

Just a note of caution...I will not & do not suggest fishing the river under the Freeport (rt. 356) bridge anymore until penndot does the rehab that it is scheduled for. If you choose to fish there bring a HARD HAT!!!! Last night, a friend & his son were fishing this spot with me when a 4x6x1/2 inch piece of bridge (rust) fell & landed 3 feet in front of my friend & within 1 foot of his pole. The piece of rust left a mark in the ground an inch deep.Shore & boat fishermen should be aware of this.Be safe.......

Lundman....If you run the channel you can open her up with no worries.Pay attention @ the mouth of buffalo there,s a flat that runs out, but only in lower h2o it,s a real problem. Have seen guys chew up props once they get on it.Stay to the right going out of buffalo if you use that ramp. Right above the Kiski there's a island easy to see, but in higher h2o watch the down stream side, it submerges part of this island.Across the river from the Kiski is a small feeder steam that has a long rocky point below it, a natural wing dam of some sort. This can be a great spot sometimes.I haven't been on the river (in a boat) since last year, things change, be careful. If you try to fish under rt 356 bridge, be aware, it is falling a part literally. Watch you don't get smacked in the head with falling bridge debris.
