Sight fish with a muddler minnow. Throw fly in front of the fish. He,ll suck that up like it was candy.

Wally Cat…Fishing below a lock is exactly what I am talking about. I have fished this way many a times on the Allegheny. I only anchor the front of the boat which allows it to sway side to side in the current. I then place the planers out to the port and starboard sides. As the boat turns the inner set of planers will fall over and float back as the outer set of planers stand up and move forward. This pattern then reverses as the boat drifts back the other way and the baits stay in about six foot pattern. The baits are always in motion and you get to set back watch, wait, and let the boat do the work.

Good Luck!

I really like that idea and if you are fishing with a partner you can put two lines out and down directly behind the boat giving you a nice wide spread of baits.

Aaah, boilies are over-rated, but I use 'em sometimes and make my own as well.  It's hard to beat canned sweet corn or a loaf of bread------the most basic of carp baits, but effective.  But I use LOTS of different kinds of carp baits.

Like baits for any other species of fish, carp baits can be broken down into two (well, three actually) categories, live/natural bait and artificials.  The third bait category, that I like to call prepared baits, covers the vast homemade carp(applies to catfish too) bait concoctions us crazy carpers come up with.

My favorite live/natural carp baits are crayfish and mulberries. I guess I don't really have a favorite artificial since I'm not a fly fisherman, although I have caught a few carp on flies using a cheapo flyrod just to prove I could.  I've also caught a few carp on a small rapala countdown minnow in the past.  If I had to pick a favorite artifical carp bait it would be fake plastic corn I guess.

Now when it comes to prepared baits, that's where things get really interesting, because I use all kinds, including corn and various other particles like chick peas, tiger nuts, etc., etc., doughball, packbait, and all the different baits (soybean meal, taters, oats, bulgur, couscous, wheat germ, rice, etc.) used at the paylakes.  If I had to pick one overall favorite carp bait, it would be old yellow---paylaker speak fer cornmeal.  Good ole cornmeal doughball has to be about the oldest carp bait going, but still the best IMO.

Yep, it has.  Caught my PB on yella as well.
I've been fishin' the paylakes for nearly 20 years myself, but don't get down to fish them much anymore unfortunately.  But I'll hit them at least a few times this year.  Hopefully the carp will be rippin' this year.

I enjoy using yellow corn for carp, it's easy to use. I usually pick up a few nice bass on it also. I also caught my 1st and only Golden trout on it. It was a nice surprise.

I've been making a back bait/method mix with corn meal, cream corn, millet, dried soy beans, and whatever else I pick up out of my pantry. Pack some tightly around the sinker and put 1-4 pieces of corn on a hair rig and cast it out. My success has easily tripled if not more with the pack bait. Compared to just corn.

Im a fan of corn too but as Ive mentioned before the carp seem to not want it after the spawn. Im gonna try some pack bait this year much like yours FishinGuy. I was figuring on using creamed corn, cornmeal, and oats.

Re: RE: Whats your favorite baits?? 2014/04/05 16:09:40 (permalink)
Bread/bread pack along with maggots as hookbait has been producing best for me so far this year, river carpin' since late Feb.  Like to use some live worms or maggots sometimes when the water is still cold/cool earlier in the year.
(A loaf of) bread is about the most versatile carp bait going, producing year-round, but especially earlier in the year in cooler water, with a variety of ways/forms to fish it.
Until this past week, the bread/maggot combo was workin' best compared to some other packs I was trying.  But my last couple trips they started rippin' other baits, including hair-rigged boilies with s-beanmeal/oat based pack.  It's good to be able to fish 3 rods now (especially when it's slow, as it can be early in the Spring) to try various baits and experiment.

For us, the bloodier the BETTER.  A catfish has over 175,00 taste buds located inside and outside of its body.  Use a bait that will naturally "chum" the area, and they come TO the bait..

I use hot dogs and shrimp/crayfish for catfish. I have never tried fishing for carp before.
