Ambridge Reservoir

I was on google maps looking at bodies of water in the Allegheny, Beaver, and Butler tri-county area and came across the Ambridge Reservoir. It looks like it would be a great place to fish, but I can't find any information on it. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

I never heard of it so I Googled it and came up with a website people posted to - it seems it is water supply only - No recreational activity allowed, with arrests often made.  But, with that said, people posted reports of excellent bass fishing.  So take this info with a grain of salt.

It is nice water, but as said before you take a good chance of getting fined. It is patrolled often. This year seems to be the worst i have heard for people getting nabbed.

it is a private fishing hole for a select few, if you know the right people. If not you have to play commando and dodge the patrols, or get busted, the old rank has it's privilage saying is true.

That's a pretty good synopsis of fishing at the Ambridge Res. w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

w.w. Unfortunatly the same is true for most of the water supply lakes in Penna. with a few exeptions. That is why a group of us had expended years of effort to try to open up Beaver Run Res. in Westm'd county, only to be stabbed in the back by the (2 Toms) after the local election. They are the 2 Democratic county commisioners. However there is an option that was left out & that is to maintain your integrity & stay out of posted property or try to find a way to get it open for everyone. I tried & failed, maybe someone can do better.  sam

and the state of PA wonders why fishing license sales are always down.  all the good lakes in the state are water reservoirs that are closed to fishing.  i dont see why they can't open these reservoirs to fishing, just dont allow boats and you wont have problems with pollution.

Invicta, don't really want to be argumentive, but, first: fishing & hunting license sales are down all across the U.S.,second, not all of the good lakes are water res. that are closed to fishing, third,I agree that most of them could be open with-out any problems. As far as the pollution problems, closing it to boats would not stop littering, which because of high visibility is the more serious prob.  We are fortunate to have more public water in Penna. than anyone could fish in thier entire life. If they would open these waters to the public, in a few years the fish pop. would drop & that would lessen the allure to a lot of people, thus eliminateing a lot of problems. Sort of like what happened to Keystone Power Dam when they first opened it. It still gets busy but the catch rate & pressure is both down from the glory year.  sam

Peaked my curiosity.  No hard info, but it sure looks like it is most likely "open" and being "closed" by a few people.  A Google search shows it has a website and you will see people who have been fishing it posting results!  I also found this image.  If you look by the dam, you will see a car and boat trailer in the lot and if you look at the upper end of the lake, you will see the boat on the water!  Definitely bears more investigating(which I am going to try and do.)

Simple, make it electric only access by boat, just like the Cambria county water reservoir lakes.

That makes the most sense, no excuses then, a little litter won't pollute a whole lake. Gas and oil would be the big enemy for drinking water.

That would be news to the thousands of people that get their daily water from that source. Yes it used for a water supply. I know people that work there. Fishing for some  privileged,$300.00 trespassing fine for others.

    Slab,
Page three of the 2015 annual water report, water comes from Service Creek Reservoir, AKA, Ambridge Reservoir.  Maybe I am missing something?

Re: Ambridge Reservoir 2017/02/09 12:35:22 (permalink)
In 1950, the Ambridge Water Authority was incorporated as a PA municipal authority, an entity separate from municipal government.  Ambridge Borough turned all of the assets over to AWA for $1.00.  The major reason for creating the water authority was an ongoing problem with water quality and quantity.  Up to this point, water had been obtained from a series of wells along the banks of the Ohio River.  The water was heavily laden with iron and manganese, prompting complaints regarding the odor and staining properties of the water.   The first water purification plant was built in 1933 to treat the well water.  As industry increased, the well water supply also became inadequate.  The drilling of new wells proved useless, as large flows were not realized and the water quality was poor.  The solution was the creation of the Service Creek Reservoir.

As a municipal authority, AWA could issue revenue bonds to provide the funds necessary to create a reservoir, and $2.6 million in bonds to be repaid over the next 26 years made this possible.  The creation of the reservoir met with some public objection, but when the outcome was realized with plentiful high-quality water, the objections quickly faded and consumers generally expressed great pride in the resource.  The water plant had been expanded in 1941 and was reconfigured in 1952-1954 to adapt to the new source water.  Treatment remains fairly minimal and straight-forward to this day due to the high quality of the water from Service Creek Reservoir.

Today, the system serves Ambridge Borough, Harmony Township, Economy Borough, and about half of Bell Acres through direct sales.  In addition, bulk water is sold to Baden Borough, Edgeworth Municipal Authority (which serves Edgeworth, Leetsdale, Leet Township and the remainder of Bell Acres), and New Sewickley Municipal Authority in two areas.  Today’s service population is just short of 30,000 individuals.  AWA has an emergency interconnect with West View Water Authority in the northeast corner of Economy Boro.  AWA serves as an emergency source for Conway Borough.

I worked pipeline right near Ambridge in 2012-13.  I remember then that there were locals who said that you had to know the security guards to fish it.  It looks very appealing, I heard there were very large crappie and bass.

If I remember right there was a pretty small creek that came out of there that we could see carp in.

I had the pleasure to fish there about 7 years ago with my buddy's Mark and Stumpy. Stumpy was the gatekeeper at that time. Met Mark while fishing Shenango Lake. The panfishing was fantastic with most bluegills over 9" and crappies over 12". The bass were huge too. One day the three of us caught over 200 panfish, keeping around 40. I took them all as they didn't want to clean them after a long day of fishing. I've got a picture somewhere in my photobucket account. I i find it, i'll post it later. Fished it twice that year and did great each time. I heard last year they were going to open it to the public. Never heard the follow up tho.
