Sounds like a great time, unfortantely I won't be able to attend (that gotta go to work thing) but I do have a question as to the rules.  You mention to bring a camera so is it a catch and release honor system format.  Only reason that I ask is that I am strickly a C&R and am curious if the format works following a C&R policy (which would be great).

Uncle Kevin,
I/we try to promote C&R in the "One Fly" and in most cases on the tribs.  But even I have to admit that if I manage to catch a nice brown or a really fresh "chromer" they're heading for the skillet/smoker.  And yes we do use the Honor System for the "One Fly". We achieve this by usually blind pairing of the folks, so that you are not only a team you are also in competition (sort of like Jeff Gordon and JR) and that helps keep things honest. Also there is NO ENTRY FEE and no prize money, and as long as I can help it there never will be. I encourage people to donate stuff to help make the thing better but I will never turn anybody away if they don't bring anything.  That's just not the way to build friendships.  I have met some of the best people through this and you would be suprised at the quality of the stuff we have to give away.  But I'll let one of the other participants from last year reinforce that.
I think the only time we would question somebody would be if they claimed  6 fish caught when everybody else was skunked.  That's why I suggest a digital camera.  No cheating has ever occured, and I hope it never will, because this is supposed to be a get-together/rendezvous type thing.  If someone has a win-at-all-costs attitude then I think they would be better served somewhere else.  Just my opinion.  Hope something turns so you can make it up.

I'll confirm what Indy said... it's not a competition (per se), just a reason to get together, meet some fellow members on this board, and have fun. I had a blast at this thing last year, and even being skunked came away with some really nice door prizes.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

As one of Indsguiz's elves, I can also confirm this is not a competition so much as a good time to catch up with old friends and make new ones.  When we worked up the format the idea was to have some type of challenge and that is the one fly rule.  Beyond that the only other requirement is to have fun.  In all honesty, the idea of the One Fly was to have an excuse for a group of guys to get together and enjoy some time on the stream.

All of the prizes are donated and it is our intention to see that as many people as possible walk away with something, but the real prize for me is knowing that a whole bunch of great people had a good day on the streams and enjoy themselves.

If you are a super competative person looking for a high stakes fishing tournament, this is most likely not what you want, but if you are a regular guy wanting to have some fun with a bunch of other regular guys then the One Fly is for you.

I look forward to meeting all you guys on the 11th.  Hopefully we will have some good fishing conditions.

Gentlemen,
I'm adding this to make things easier for those who wish to help out!  First:  THANK YOU   Second:  If you want to bring food  Please PM Skip 16503.  If you want to donate a prize or stuff for prizes (s) like flies, line or leaders, hats shirts ect. please e-mail me at:  hemilovr@hotmail.com.  or pm Bughawk.  Just so we know what is coming and we can figure out what place the prizes go to.  My only IF is if you wish to donate for 1st, 2d, 3d, place team awards I'll need two of whatever since it is two man teams.  If you just want to donate a door prize then just 1 of something will do.   If you are insanely rich and want to donate a pair of Orvis rods > > >  I'm sure Bug and I could form a team  LOL!

Youghman,
Didn't really plan it that way.  We decided on our date way back in May/June and figured they would have theirs the end of Sept, as usual, and so I have always scheduled for Columbus Day weekend.  When they scheduled for the same day I moved my start/end times around so folks could attend both.  Hope it works out well for both groups.  I know I am going to try to get to both events.

God willing and wife permitting, I will be there.
It will be ironic though, because Ive still never caught a steelie on a fly rod.  Caught em on flies with a noodle, but never a fly-rod.  This will be a challenge, but getting to hang out with you guys will be fun.  I hope Skip makes shrimp....

Well I was sitting here thinking... what's the point of driving 300 miles for one day of fishing. So I took thursday and friday off and got a campground. I need a little vacation anyways. So I'll be up wednesday night thru sunday. If anyone want's to share a drift or some beers around the fire thurs/fri before the One Fly hit me up.

Anyone can join and you can use any fly you want. As long as it's a fly. Remember to bring 2.

As far as I know you do not have to tie the fly yourself.

WoW!  Joedv1218,
If you had to tie your own fly I don't think I'd even be allowed to participate in the "One Fly" let alone organize it.  I am the worst tie flyer ever.  Every time I try to tie it comes out as "lint on a hook"  (with feathers).
I can build a bamboo rod to catch the critters on but I sure can't tie a fly.
Buy what you want, just remember to bring two and let me know if you're in.
The skill of some of the guys who will be there amazes me.  I get a thrill just seeing some of the stuff people tie to donate.  And some guys like to show off some pretty exotic stuff.   Plus everybody sems eager to help another out.   Good Folks.

Pxatim,  I know what you mean.  What's the use of driving 508 miles just to put on a fishing contest. I'll be up on Thursday night.  It would make a good commercial:  Gas to drive 1,000 miles round tip  $200
Building a bamboo flyrod to give away  $400
Three days in a hotel  $500
Getting to spend a day with some of the greatest
people I've had the privelege to meet  -  PRICELESS

Don't worry about being a beginner.  The whole idea of the One Fly is to have fun and enjoy hanging out with some great people.  There really is no serious pressure.  Some of the guys who come are excellent fly fisherman and then there are the rest of us who hardly know what we are doing.  Basically, come down if you can and do the best you can and learn a few new things.

Jack, I will also be in the one fly this year. I will put up a small fly box with 12 of my best patterns for a prize. P.S. - This year Worm Waster must fish for steehead in a stream not sheephead in the bay!

actually, wormwaster did what I was going to do last year, but decided against it. I wanted to catch steelie's, not bluegills. (of course he caught fish and I didn't)
